If you find bold, bright colours and statement prints a little too daring for everyday wear, why not opt for sophisticated black? Fashion designer Lyndel Yeo has always had a strong focus on colour but is releasing a collection this season that focuses purely on black pieces featuring strong lines, feminine silhouettes and the play between structure and flow.
Her new Black Label collection offers flexibility in dressing by presenting pieces that can double as wardrobe staple items while still considering style. “I’ve had people respond to coloured garments that I’ve designed and they often say that they’d wear the same item if it were black,” Lyndel said. She admits that this is what prompted her to create the collection.
Lyndel’s aim was to design a black collection that would allow her to cater to a market that prefers subtle garments that can be worn more often. “The black collection also means that I was able to concentrate more on the detailing and design, as opposed to coloured garments where the print or the fabric tends to be the central focus,” she explained.
Lyndel suggests that wearing all black allows you to tone down an outfit and the garment has the potential to look different every time by changing the accessories, so you can get away with creating a variety of looks from the one piece. “It’s about being versatile,” she said. The collection features a high-waisted tutu made from luxurious cottons, paired with a silk midriff top so incorporates a touch of elegance along with a fun and flirty approach to dressing. Another key look for Miss Lyndel Yeo’s Black Label includes a divine ocean frill dress with French seams and stunning silk satin. The dress provides trans-seasonal styling and features gorgeous frill detailing, a halter neckline and a deep back.
The Miss Lyndel Yeo label has been in the making for almost five years now and it has been a long journey for Lyndel to get it to this point. “The past year has seen the label take off thanks to the support of some strong followers,” she said. And the label is now at a stage where it is doing relatively well, attracting a solid clientele and market. “Of course I have plans to do bigger and better things with the label but for the moment I’m definitely happy with what I’ve achieved so far,” Lyndel said. She sheepishly admits that social networking sites such as Facebook have increased her marketability and have helped in spreading the awareness of her brand to her target market. “It adds a personal touch because I feel I can almost be friends with my customers and interact with them directly. I’m not able to do this at the stores where my label is stocked,” she explains.
As part of the official Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2009 calendar, Miss Lyndel Yeo showcased her new collection at The Naked Truth charity event and at Miss Green’s Garden Party.
Now available in store, the Black Label collection is described as figure flattering, sweet and feminine whilst representing confidence and conviction.
