Kids are curious, they like to learn by doing…and they love to play in the dirt! By working in the garden from an early age, children can experience the satisfaction that comes from caring for something whilst also observing the cycle of life first hand. Gardening with your kids can be an enjoyable and enriching experience for everyone involved.
Melbourne based Landscape Designer Phillip Withers received a gold medal and the Best in Show award for his adventure-filled garden I See Wild at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Here are his top five tips to get kids involved in the garden.
Give Children Their Own Space To Garden
Let your kids have ownership of their own garden bed, to grow their own plants and to decorate it how they want to. Start with easy to grow vegies, flowers or herbs.
Aim For Some Quick Results
Kids will respond better to plants that grow and/or germinate quickly. Try planting some sunflowers or fast growing nasturtiums, both these seeds with start to respond within seven days.
Get Arty
Gardening isn’t always about growing plants. Children will love to make a scarecrow, a bird feeder or even paint their own rocks to use as plant labels or garden art.
Create Some Wild Areas
Children love seeing wildlife in their garden. Try creating a birdfeeder, a birdbath or worm farm. Grow some plants that attract butterflies and birds.
Have Tools That Are Made For Children
Having size appropriate tools can make all the difference. Gloves that fit snugly are a must, as are hand tools specifically designed for children. A large watering can is going to be too heavy for a child to lift, but a smaller one or a Bottle Top Waterer will be just right.
