New York’s Rangefinder Magazine – the award-winning monthly magazine for wedding and portrait photographers, and the official publication of the USA’s Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) – has just announced its prestigious annual list of the 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography, naming Melbourne-based photographer Lucy Spartalis as the only Australian winner.
Rangefinder strives to present the most inspiring and innovative work, trends and gear for an international readership of professional photographers. The 30 Rising Stars are chosen for their exceeding talent, as well as their spark for directing the industry to new, exciting heights. Every year over 200 photographers from around the world are nominated by the magazine’s staff and other industry tastemakers, with a final 30 artists selected to have their work featured in the special announcement issue.
Born in Adelaide, Lucy Spartalis studied at the Centre for Creative Photography before moving to Melbourne in 2009. She is now based in Collingwood, with her work regularly taking her around Australia and overseas as one half of the duo She Takes Pictures He Makes Films – a collaboration with her filmmaker partner (in work and life), Alastair Innes.
Spartalis’ style involves both fine art and photojournalistic techniques – enabling her to create boldly composed portraits alongside honest documentation of real life.
