THE SUMMERHOUSE
If you’re looking for a stylish and luxurious bed and breakfast that’s nestled just out of town in the Byron Bay hinterlands, The Summerhouse is the perfect retreat.
Complete with Moroccan interior accents, the ambient and spacious living area sweeps out to reveal an alfresco terrace, pool and stunning 180 degree views of the Byron Bay beach and surrounding rainforest.
Here I spent days inspired by the scenery, writing and entertaining guests from the large dining table. It’s a divine space to share with friends, over a meal and a good drop of wine.
When I wanted to really unwind, the outdoor day beds were the perfect way to soak up the sunshine, whilst reading magazines by the sumptuous salt-water pool – and working on my faux tan.
And of course, what’s the best part about a bed and breakfast? The breakfast, of course. Each day’s menu was different, with staff cooking gourmet meals to enjoy in the alfresco area. The kitchen also had plenty of room to store my own food, and a seemingly never-ending supply of Byron Bay cookies. But what stood out more than my Michelan Star-esque eggs was the service and friendliness of the staff that cooked them.
My room had its own private balcony, which I enjoyed at night wrapped in their mohair throw whilst breathing in the atmospheric evening air and listening to the ocean’s waves roll in the distance. A complete and utter feeling of contentment with the present moment.

THE SEAVIEW HOUSE
On the other side of town, majestically perched upon the hill that leads you to the famous Byron Bay Lighthouse, is Seaview House.
Whilst the rooms are not luxurious, they are pleasant and comfortable, but what you’re checking in for here is the view. And what better way to enjoy it than with a wine at sunset, from the upper deck balcony, which boasts an unbridled panorama of the region.
A meandering tropical path from my room wound me down the hill and straight to the beach’s doorstep. I’d like to say that I bounded onto the beach at sunrise, to walk its length whilst taking in the splendour of the colours marking the morning’s sky, signaling the beginning of a brand new day, but many would know that would be a complete lie. I don’t do early mornings. Not even in Byron Bay, and especially not when I had a private verandah and sun lounge to laze on whilst leisurely easing myself into the day. At night, I slept with the windows flung open so I could inhale the sea air and feel close to the ocean, as every single one of its waves washed serenity over my mind and soul.
