From an up and coming destination to a European staple, Croatia has been at the top of traveller’s European bucket list for some time now, but what’s the next European destination travellers are looking to?
Situated in the middle of the stunning Mediterranean, the islands of Malta are historically rich and picturesque fusions of nature and culture. Between sprawling crystal blue waters and over 7,000 years of history, there are countless places and things to see across the archipelago nation. And, with a six-month summer stacking up an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, more than double that of Croatia – it’s the new ‘hot’ spot in Europe.
But if you’re still wondering what makes Malta so special? The team from Topdeck Travel have shared the five top reasons you simply have to make Malta your must-see destination on your next European adventure.
Marsaxlokk Market
If you’re looking to spend your Sunday wandering around local markets, then Marsaxlokk is a must. The small and picturesque village is the oldest port in all of Malta, famed for its open-air Sunday Market where tourists can take a stroll browsing goods and tasting some authentic Maltese delicacies with everything from souvenirs to sardines on sale! The truly unique thing about Marsaxlokk is its bay, filled with colourful traditional fishing boats, not only providing a feast for the eyes but also the tastebuds.
Valletta
Although being one of the smallest countries in Europe, Malta’s capital city, Valletta snagged the prize for the European Capital of Culture in 2018. With a strong cultural scene, travellers visiting at any point of the year will find an array of international and local musicians performing music of every genre. Art lovers also have the opportunity to visit Malta’s flagship national art gallery MUZA, located in the heart of the city.
Other than the city’s stunning cathedrals, War Museum and historical sites, Valletta’s Upper Barrakka Gardens is a must-go for any traveller, offering a striking panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the perfect insta-moment.
Gozo
Known as Malta’s charming little sister, Gozo is only a few miles across the water and a short 25-minute scenic ferry. Home to a medieval citadel and some of the oldest temples in the world, Gozo is bursting with history dating back to the Bronze Age. But don’t think this spot is only for the history geeks, this delightful little island is known for its rugged landscape and spectacular coastline, as well as clear blue water which attract divers each year with an array of interesting dive sites. All in all, Gozo is the perfect place to relax, chill-out and revitalise. Topdeck include a full day Gozo Jeep Safari and a boat trip to the island of Comino to see the Blue Lagoon in their Sicily & Malta trip!
Megalithic Temples
No trip to Malta is complete without a day spent immersing yourself in the rich history the islands have to offer. Malta boasts some of the oldest temples in the world that even pre-date Egypt’s pyramids and Britain’s Stonehenge by over 1,000 years. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples date back 5,500 years and are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world!
Food
The Maltese love their food so naturally the culinary scene here is full of flavour and heavily influenced by its neighbours, most notably Italy and Sicily, but you’ll also discover a sampling of North African cuisine and a dash of Malta’s own. Whilst in Malta, you must try the traditional beef dish bragioli and the famous Maltese cheese, gbejna.
Brimming with delectable delicacies and countless historical and natural wonders, Malta is a Mediterranean paradise and a dream destination for any traveller.
Topdeck encourages travellers to go off the traditional tourist trail and its Sicily & Malta Explored tour offers culture-packed trips with stop offs at Marsaxlokk, Valletta, Gozo and more.
