I love a weekend getaway. And I recently fell in love with the quaint pioneer town of Swan Hill, located in regional Victoria. Boasting an enviable year-round Mediterranean-like climate, stunning natural wonders and a busy calendar of events across the year, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic weekender, a family getaway or even – as I did – a solo bit of timeout.
1. Sunshine
The Swan Hill region is known for having more hours of sunshine than Queensland’s Gold Coast – even during winter. This makes Swan Hill the perfect place for a family getaway during the cooler months, where the surrounding forests and hiking trails along with the mighty Murray River beckons.
2. High Thyme Café
Swan Hill is well known as one of Australia’s best food and wine regions. When I read that, the Melbournian inside me scoffed a little, I’ll admit. However one brunch at High Thyme Café and I was – legitimately – considering a move to Swan Hill. Brett’s incredible café served up some incredible food, and the best cold drip coffee I’ve had in my life.
3. Pioneer History
Evidence of early pioneer life can be seen when walking through the streets of Swan Hill, from period-inspired brick architecture to charming pioneer cottages. A visit to the famous Pioneer Settlement is an experience also not to be missed. Here, history comes alive via immaculately preserved buildings from a bygone area. Ride in an old car, tuck into delicious cakes from a nineteenth century tearoom and enjoy a leisurely river cruise on board the PS Pyap.
4. Food and Wine
The Swan Hill region’s warm weather and soft loam hills along the Murray River provide optimal growing conditions for citrus and stone fruit. The region is also home to an amazing range of producers, growers and wineries – all within an easy drive from each other. Meanwhile, much-loved restaurants such as Quo Vadis and Spoons Riverside pride themselves in using the best local produce from the region.
5. Water Activities
With the Murray River snaking through, the Swan Hill region is the ideal spot for those seeking a jam-packed weekend away. Fancy yourself an avid angler? Set your eyes upon the prized Murray cod. Prefer to canoe? The Swan Hill section of Murray is famous for its natural rapids, creating ideal conditions for an afternoon session. For those who prefer to water-ski, kayak, swim or sail, the waters of Lake Boga is the place to be.
6. Art Gallery & Museum
On rare rainy days, the Swan Hill region provides many indoor activities to keep you dry and entertained. The Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery hosts one of Australia’s more comprehensive collections of native art and runs interactive exhibitions throughout the year. For history buffs, the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum takes you back to the 1940s – make sure you explore the rebuilt A24-30 Catalina Flying Boat.
7. Lake Tyrrell
Located 70kms from Swan Hill central, Lake Tyrrell is Victoria’s largest inland salt lake and attracts thousands of visitors (and Instagrammers) with its breathtaking scenery. During the winter months, the clear sky is reflected onto the water resulting in amazing photographic effects.
8. Excellent Accommodation
The Jane Eliza Motor Inn – located on Campbell Street (the main street in Swan Hill) is honestly the best motel I’ve stayed in in my life (and I’ve seen my share of them). Spacious, clean, with every amenity required for a short or extended stay – not to mention a central location – made it the absolute perfect choice for my getaway.
9. Country Charm
Over the years, Swan Hill has transformed into a modern city but still retains the heart and soul of a country town. When wandering through its modern streetscapes, you will encounter its beautiful historical buildings as well as those lost to the evolution of progress. It is also worth venturing beyond Swan Hill central and exploring neighbouring towns such as Robinvale, Nyah and Nyah West, each with their own unique character and identity.
10. Walking Trails
The Swan Hill region’s relatively flat terrain makes it a wonderful destination to explore on foot. There are several designated walking trails to explore, all suited for all fitness levels. The ‘Now and Then’ trail takes you through Swan Hill’s modern streetscapes, allowing you to discover historical buildings, while the River Walk takes you on a 4.5km journey along the Murray River to discover the area’s flora and fauna.
