Mardi Gras, regarded as a national holiday in parts of Europe, South America and the United States and celebrates the last day of normalcy, where people come together in vivid, traditional Mardi Gras colours of purple, green and gold, dress up for eccentric parades and indulge in a variety of dishes before returning to their daily lives.
Now, imagine the scene of music, conviviality, and a feast that never ends reinvented in the heart of Melbourne! Without hesitation, consider our attention piqued.
In true festive fashion,The Moldy Fig team are putting together a feast for the eyes, belly and soul with endless rounds of free food on February 25 at their Brunswick venue, bringing full-on fun to the community. A one day only event, open to the public, full of free NOLA based dishes and drinks available for purchase at their bar, live performances and dancing – with everything needed for a magically raucous affair, why wouldn’t you want to come?
On arrival, guests will be welcomed with Mardi Gras beads as part of the festivities, as live jazz bands, The Bird Conference and Willow Jam, set the mood for the evening fun. From there, you’ll be encouraged to learn about the Mardi Gras traditions in NOLA, whilst plenty of drinks, sponsored by the likes of KAIJU!, Abita, Varichon & Clerc blanc de blancs bubbles and New Orleans’ very own Southern Comfort can be purchased at the bar in style.
When describing the menu for the evening, Dorelle encourages customers to “think big and explore authenticity in a cuisine different to those usually found in Melbourne.” Some feature items include the traditional Native American Indian pie, introduced to Louisiana in the 1700s called ‘Natchitoches Pies’, to ‘Gumbo’, the official dish of Louisiana made from a 100-year-old recipe that was given to the Moldy Fig by a New Orleans’ elder to add to the authenticity! If you’re more of a sweet tooth, then the ‘King Cake’ will be something to keep your eyes out for – an iced sweet cinnamon bread decorated with the traditional colours and only eaten during the Mardi Gras season!
While The Moldy Fig’s Mardi Gras celebration may seem like a generous moment shared between a community, its meaning extends far greater than a neighborhood celebration. Dorelle’s focus is on showing Melbourne an authentic NOLA Mardi Gras, showcasing the real experience, one that celebrates lavish feasting, marking an evening of endless partying.
