My first and only memories of live sailing take me back to a time when, as a grumpy pre-teen, my parents dragged me round the Auckland Harbour to view the glamour of the America’s Cup. It was at a time when New Zealand ruled the seas, and I remember my parents’ repeated gasps at the amount of money involved in sailing and them pondering how a little country with not much money at all could be so good at the sport. Amongst all the glitz, the yachts stood proud and tall and the men behind them remarkably down to earth next to the fancy sport they partook in. Memories of this evening so many years ago reminded me that sailing is, without a doubt, a glamourous sport comparable to horse racing and polo, so I jumped at the chance to attend the ISAF Sailing World Cup Ladies Day in Melbourne.
I had high hopes of seeing some of the sport of sailing, but unfortunately the La Nina weather that is hitting Australia seems unstoppable, unlike the yachts which were too dangerous to race in the conditions. As a result I didn’t see a single boat on the water, but I did see some fabulous fashions inside the beautifully decorated Sandringham Yacht Club. Despite the grey weather, fashions were so bright and fun they almost convinced me that the sun had come out for the day. Of particular note was Anna Campbell, who sent models down the faux-grass runway in floaty, dreamy pieces made of the most delicate fabrics. Similar themes ran strong with designers Miss Lyndel Yeo and Eva Q, which reminded us of summer garden parties complete with Chambord cocktails. Pastels and flowing fabrics were statement of the fashion event and resonated well with the enthusiastic crowd. Best of all were the constant reminders that it was all for a great cause – the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
Between the fashion, Cham Chams, and glorious three-course meal, I almost forgot that I was unfortunate to not be able to see any actual sailing. Perhaps that’s a good thing however, as I have an excuse to go back next year. Watch out, Spring Racing, Sail Melbourne is hot on your heels.
