Don’t let the fact that Polo is a sport usually associated with royals send you into war with your wardrobe. Polo fashion is the more relaxed, casual cousin to races fashion. But casual does not mean careless. Opt for loose and breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen, play around with summer’s bright colours and leave the stilettos at home.
LADIES
Laid-back luxe is the dress code to channel – think tailored pieces in block colours, elegant materials and bold accessories. But remember to keep things at a modest length. If you can see yourself wearing it next time you go out clubbing, take it off and start again.
THE BODY
A long printed maxi dress or kaftan conveys a look of easy glamour at the polo. Shift dresses in bold colours, lace or prints like the season’s highly coveted leopard print are also good options for the polo scene, making an easy statement. If you’re packing a punch in your dress, choose simpler accessories that compliment the rest of your outfit. Don’t feel restricted to dresses and skirts though – a jumpsuit or playsuit in luxurious materials are a classy and stylish alternative. For a different look, why not go for a pair of tailored shorts with a crisp white shirt, wedges and statement necklace?
Colours to go for: The biggest trends will be all white, monochrome and colour blocking. We’re loving emerald green, cobalt blue, bright yellow, orange, and rich purples.
THE SHOES
The polo is no place for stilettos. To avoid the embarrassment of getting your heel stuck in the field during The Divot Stomp (which, of course, having read Part 1 you already know all about), instead go for wedges, chunkier heeled shoes or flats. It’s the perfect opportunity to take those new pretty jeweled sandals out for a spin.
THE ACCESSORIES
A nice pair of sunglasses are an absolute must. Bring a bag that fits the necessities in, such as suncream, phone and makeup to do touch ups throughout the day. This could be a clutch or a chic shoulder strap bag. Unlike the races, headwear is not obligatory but a floppy hat or fedora is a stylish and practical option to keep the sun out of your eyes.
MEN
With no strict rules to abide by, have fun with your style and create a relaxed but smart ensemble with coloured separates and quirky details.
THE BODY
Stay away from the drab office shades of grey and black with your suit. Chinos or shorts provide the perfect casual base for shirts and jackets in colour pop hues like blue, orange and even pink. We’re also loving choosing items in different shades of the same colour for an on-trend, statement look. If a bit more reserved is more your thing, you can never go wrong with a classic white shirt, neutral coloured pants and smart jacket.
To tie or not to tie? That’s entirely up to you. The sporty button-down colour shirt is a great tie-free option, while a tie in an interesting pattern, bright colour or even bow tie add interesting and stylish touches to an outfit. Inject even more personality into your outfit with coloured socks or shoelaces (we love the ones from Mavericks Laces).
THE SHOES
Leather or suede loafers and boat shoes are always hits in the summer weather, but really any smart shoes are appropriate.
THE ACCESSORIES
A good pair of sunglasses.
