According to Oliver Robinet, CEO of Decathlon, many Aussies will be heading to the snow this year with less money in their pocket thanks to the rising cost of fuel, interest rates and the general cost of living.
“Despite rising costs, we are seeing record snow fall which means we are in for a bumper snow season this year – and it is too good to miss. We have all been locked up with the pandemic; this is the first time in three years that we have the chance to get out and enjoy it,” Robinet said.
“Aussies love going to the snow so it is important that they find the most affordable way to do this. We don’t want anyone to miss out on the fun because of cost.”
Robinet is the head of Decathlon’s operations in Australia. Decathlon is the world’s largest sports products designer, manufacturer and retailer and they also sell one of the country’s largest selections of high quality snow gear at affordable prices. Their annual snow sale runs from May to June 2022 and Decathlon has shipped in additional stock from France to meet increased demand for their products this year.
Robinet has outlined some tips on how to enjoy the snow on a budget.
Be flexible with your accommodation
“Accommodation costs go up during peak snow season so it is important to be flexible with your bookings,” Robinet said.
“Try and find accommodation close to major hubs so you are not paying a premium. Aim for accommodation that offers free cancellation or date changes, this way you won’t be stung with unnecessary fees and charges. Also check hotel or resort inclusions as some offer more benefits than others such as free lessons.
“In general, the more lifts, the higher the price, do your homework.”
Buy your lift tickets online
“Some sites and resorts offer discounts if you purchase your lift tickets online, especially if you buy them well in advance,” Robinet said.
The more days you buy, the better the discount. You may be able to save up to 15 percent on three to seven-day lift passes if you purchase your passes two weeks in advance at some locations. Savings can be quite a lot if you book really early.
Some online lift tickets also include added benefits such as night skiing, gondola rides, or other perks like free skiing in the afternoon prior to your first full day pass. Buying online means you can also skip the queues and head straight to the lift on arrival.
Take your own food
“Like anything, if you travel to the snow during peak season, the costs are always higher and this includes food and drink,” Robinet said.
“If you are going up to the snow to go skiing or sightseeing for the day, pack your own lunch and nibbles. This helps to reduce the cost when you need to stop for morning tea or lunch.”
Get cheap snow gear
“Going to the snow can be an expensive exercise but thankfully there are a few ways you can reduce your cost,” Robinet said.
“Hiring equipment is one option and it is ideal if you are only ever planning on going to the snow once, but if you are aiming to go more than once and you want to be able to use some of your winter clothing for activities other than playing in the snow, purchasing your gear is a good option.
“Take advantage of snow sales. Decathlon has reduced the price of some of its snow gear by 50 percent which means you can buy skis, boots, helmets, ski pants, ski jackets, gloves, goggles and other items at bargain prices. And the good thing is you can find your right size, whereas often hire equipment doesn’t fit properly and it can get really uncomfortable and spoil your experience – plus you can always hand it down or sell it.”
Go to the snow mid-week
“Weekends are always busy times on the snow. If you can arrange it, try and travel to the snow mid-week,” Robinet said.
“By doing this, you will get a better deal for accommodation as many rooms and villas are cheaper during weekdays. You will also find lift queues are a lot smaller and you won’t have to deal with so many people on the snow – so you will get more out of your experience.”
Book accommodation with a kitchen
“When booking your accommodation, aim to find options that include a kitchen with some cooking facilities including a microwave,” Robinet said.
“While the idea of getting away for a holiday is to avoid domestic chores, preparing food in your accommodation will cut down your food and drink expenses significantly.”
