According to Esther Labi, AKA, the Bondi Bra Whisperer, in our busy lifestyles, we all enjoy engaging in different activities and we need different bras depending on what we are doing.
“Many women enjoy a variety of sporting and physical activities to keep them in shape and loving life. Gym timetables offer everything these days, from gentle stretching yoga to high impact training workouts,” Ms Labi said.
“Different levels of activities require different bras to ensure our breasts are properly supported and we are comfortable while moving around feeling supported without restriction.”
Esther Labi is the founder of Storm in a D Cup. As Australia’s leading online retailer of lingerie and swim wear for women of all sizes, as well as a highly successful physical store in Sydney, Storm in a D Cup has become the go-to store for women all over the country. Esther and her team of bra fitters have years of experience in the industry and share the importance of matching the right bra to the right activity.
Why can’t I work out wearing my normal bra?
“You would not wear ballet shoes to go bowling, nor would you wear a snowsuit to go swimming,” Ms Labi said.
“This is because you know that you need the right clothing for the activity. In the same way, having the right sports bra support will keep your breasts in good shape in the long term. More than 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong sized sports bra and so they’re not getting the right amount of support that they need.”
Getting fitted for the right activity
“The very first thing you need to do is get yourself fitted correctly. You will also need to consider the range of physical activities that you engage in regularly,” Ms Labi added.
“If you like to do both pilates and distance running, these two activities are going to require different bras. When you’re running, you will most definitely need a compression bra. High impact sports bras have shock absorbers built into them to keep you comfortable and confident. They also need to be made with highly breathable fabrics and are made for you to sweat in.
“If you’re doing low impact exercise, then pick a low impact sports bra which is less restrictive. Sports bras made for low impact sports can be made with softer types of fabric that don’t restrict movement, so they will feel more comfortable to wear because they move with you when you move your body. Furthermore, if you do hot yoga then you’ll need to consciously choose a moisture-wicking fabric.”
Addressing the daily athleisure trend
“Athleisure is a fashion trend in which athletic clothing is both comfortable and stylish and can be worn during exercise or while out and about in casual settings. The trend really started gaining traction in the early 2002s and has become a huge part of our wardrobe,” Ms Labi said.
“With summer fast approaching, many women are already getting ready for the warmer months and starting to ramp up their physical activity to get into shape.
“Women want to combine comfort, style and convenience. However, the drawback of this trend is that it’s really not good to be wearing a sports bra all the time. Doing so can lead to skin issues and even fungal infections because the fit of a sports bra tends to be more restrictive than a normal bra. Sometimes wearing a sports bra for extra support is a sign that your normal bras don’t support you because probably your size has changed.
“Everything in moderation is a good rule to follow. So make sure you’re always wearing the right bra depending on your activity level.”
Get the right fitting
“Wearing the right bra for the right activity is absolutely critical, but so is ensuring that your bra fits you perfectly,” Ms Labi emphasised.
“While COVID has impacted the way we shop and moved many people online, it is important for women to know that you can still undertake a bra fitting without having to go into a store.
“We offer a free virtual fitting service which can be undertaken via a mobile phone on Whatsapp or Facetime. It is an easy and simple process that not only ensures you purchase the right bra size, it also reduces any concerns around having to return items if they don’t fit. More than 97 percent of women who undertake virtual bra fittings find their selected bras fit them perfectly.
“So there is no excuse not to be wearing the right fitting bra!”
