Designed as a comfortable neighbourhood hideaway, Wine 1160 – pronounced, eleven-sixty – will welcome locals and destination drinkers alike to share stories and experience true hospitality.
This bar behaves a little differently, prioritising the subtleties of its 160-strong list, placing wine at the forefront of the offering. Distinguishing itself from the many food-first watering holes in Melbourne, this is a place where the menu has been created to complement the wine.
Focused on independent artisanal producers, the wine choices have been carefully made on the values and practices of the makers themselves and are tailored to an understanding of the preferences of locals.
It’s an exciting and innovative list that sees special, benchmark wines usually only sold by the bottle become available by the glass.
Wine 1160 is the vision of owner Prabir Majumdar, a political advisor who wished to plant his roots in Melbourne after having spent much of his life on the move. He will use experience gathered throughout his travels (to more than 25 countries) to take his customers on a journey with great wine.
“I am bringing my learnings from little villages and roadside stalls, embodying their same spirit of generosity to the local community in Stonnington,” adds Prabir.
Prabir’s vision for Wine 1160 was to create a harmonious space that is both open and inclusive and this has been expressed through the venue design – championing Victorian furnishings – and also through the team of experts he has gathered to assist him.
Crafted by Chefs Sarah Porz (Valentino) and Michele Curtis, the menu consists of a range of small tastes, highlighting wine bar staples such as cheese, olives and charcuterie.
Indulgent snacks such as popcorn with gruyere salt and spiced crunchy chickpeas are expected to be crowd favourites. Both these dishes have been curated to match specific wines, the NV André Clouet ‘Grande Reserve’ Brut and Amrut ‘skin contact’ Pinot Gris respectively.
The menu plays on spice and texture with vegetarian and meat options alike. Spiced eggplant is paired with a refreshing sangiovese rosé. Meatballs, cardamom and turmeric is matched to a bright and fragrant langhe nebbiolo.
Josh Elias (Alquimie) has been brought in as a consultant and has had considerable impact on the venues branding, design and of course, wine list.
Wine 1160 is located at 1160 High Street Armadale and will be open from 12pm – 11pm from Wednesday to Sunday, 3pm-11pm Monday and closed Tuesdays.
