Isaac Constantine and Zachary Riggs, Founders of Chapel Street dive bar, Two Wrongs, are set to relaunch the iconic Golden Fleece Hotel in South Melbourne after going through an extensive demolition and refurbishment of the venue to bring Santorini to Melbourne set to open in December.
The Golden Fleece Hotel situated on Montague Street in South Melbourne will feature two floors of dining experiences, alongside an airy rooftop for those balmy summer nights. Unlike their iconic Two Wrongs venue, the Golden Fleece Hotel is set to take on a hybrid-style venue, taking traditional pub dining into a luxe and sophisticated Santorini-inspired experience, with live music and DJ’s, collaborative events, art gallery showings and more…
With its new Santorini-inspired interior, the Golden Fleece Hotel will be serving a Mediterranean-style menu, featuring gourmet Greek inspired eclectic pizzas, fresh pastas, and a tapas menu including saganaki, salt and pepper calamari, imported Spanish Yurrita white anchovies, arancini, house olives, bread, and dips.
The Golden Fleece Hotel will also pay homage to the venue’s history, serving up staple pub fare, Parma’s, fine steaks, and fish and chips, along with desserts, sandwiches, and subs. As well as traditional beers on tap, the Golden Fleece Hotel will be serving up a variety of drinks, cocktails and Greek wines and liquors from Australia and the Mediterranean. Expect lots of old-world Greek varieties you may not have heard or tasted before.
The Golden Fleece Hotel is set to bring a new fresh vibe to the South Melbourne area. Alongside all your favourite beers, the Golden Fleece Hotel will also house a bottle shop with a subscription service where you can order your favourite wines, cocktails, and beers they have available that will be delivered to your door monthly.
With a rich heritage, the Golden Fleece Hotel was first licensed in 1872 by John Edward Deeble. By 1980 an adjoining brick shop was let to grocer Edward Barton. This shop has since been incorporated into the present-day hotel. After a few name changes during the ‘80s, the Golden Fleece Hotel was refurbished during the interwar period, as evidenced by the style of the lower-level windows, parapets, and upper-level balconies.
The hotel, which advertised the ‘Best Beer in Melbourne’ on a painted sign on its façade, was popular amongst the wharfies and fishermen, and maintained a tradition of a local drinkers’ pub.
With an opening date yet to be confirmed, the Golden Fleece Hotel is pegged to open in December, just in time to celebrate the end of the year, reigning in a new year of freedom and fun.
