The world may be ending on December the 21st, according to the Mayan calendar, but there will still be time for Melburnians to enjoy great food before it does with Guzman y Gomez (GYG) Mexican Taquería giving away their Burritos for free on Thursday 20th.
To celebrate the first day of trade at their new Melbourne flagship restaurant, GYG has pledged to donate $1 to charity for every free meal collected. The total amount will then be given equally to the Misión México children’s refuge in Tapachula, Mexico and to the Melbourne branch of Legacy, the organisation that provides support for the families of incapacitated or deceased veterans.
Offering Christmas shoppers some much-needed sustenance and locals a delicious alternative, the Swanston Street restaurant, near to the arterial intersection of Lonsdale Street, is expected to break the standard record of 4,558 to giveaway more than 5,000 free meals between 11am and 8pm. GYG has become well known for their Free Burrito Days, producing a freshly-made burrito every eight seconds over nine hours straight at a recent event in Sydney.
“Other business owners might think we’re crazy to give away so much of our food for free but we believe in our food enough to do it knowing they’ll want to come again,” says Founder Steven Marks. “Plus we’ll be giving away money for two very deserving organisations in the process, Misión México who GYG have worked to support since 2008 and with Melbourne Legacy who make such an important contribution to the Victorian community.”
Conscious of the Victorian market tending to walk its own path when it comes to food, GYG quietly entered the Melbourne market in mid 2012 with a restaurant at Highpoint Shopping Centre. With the restaurant having proven a success and constant calls for more locations from avid fans, GYG is looking to open more locations across Melbourne in 2013.
“Melburnians really love their food so we’ve been thrilled by the reception we’ve had so far with customers coming from all sides of Melbourne to eat at GYG,” says Marks. “Now with our new flagship restaurant in the CBD we’ll be able to reach many more people daily.”
GYG originated in Sydney in 2006, introducing the concept of ‘fast casual dining’ – restaurant quality food made to order on the spot in a casual environment – to the Australian market. With an authentic menu of burritos, tacos, nachos and more, all made from the freshest and highest quality ingredients, it proved an instant hit and has since grown to 18 restaurants across four states with up to a dozen more expected to open in 2013.
The GYG Free Burrito Day in the Melbourne CBD will be held on Thursday 20 December from 11am – 8pm and will see all Burritos on the menu including bowls available for the entire day free of charge*.
*One Burrito or Burrito Bowl per person with no other menu items available on Free Burrito Day.
