East End Wine Bar, co-owned by Melbourne Demon Max Gawn, opens the day of his 100th game.
Hawthorn East’s newest establishment, East End Wine Bar, is co-owned by Demon’s ruckman Max Gawn, Saint James owners Rich Donovan and Craig Tate and Burnley Brewing operator Phil Gjisbergs. The team of four will officially open the doors of East End Wine Bar tomorrow, Saturday 23 March, 2019.

The iconic, century-old, 1930s auction house has been transformed into a friendly, elegant yet informal wine bar, with the area’s best food and beverages on offer. The Camberwell Road auction house closed in 2015 after eight decades as an antique dealer, and was split into two shop fronts, one of which is now known as East End Wine Bar.
“One of the biggest draw cards to this project was the space we acquired, Youngs Auction House has been a staple in the area for over 80 years, so to be able to transform this heritage building into an elegant wine bar was a no brainer,” says Donovan.

The interior reflects an English pub but with a modern Melbourne feel through their bright, beautiful timbers and steel furnishes. The venue has a capacity of 130 people across the intimate indoor space and outdoor courtyard that is bright with a retractable awning. East End also includes a bottle shop stocking a balanced selection of low yielding wine producers alongside some of the old world’s masters.

East End boasts an impressive drink offering with a huge selection of wines from all over the world. Focussing on producers who maintain the integrity of their vineyards whilst concerning themselves in quality.
The menu has been designed to share over a glass of wine with approachable food suited for wine pairing such as charcuterie boards, a selection of pizzas, preserved meats and other small dishes. With the Rivoli cinema across the road, they’re the perfect pre-movie snacks.
“Having always loved the Melbourne hospitality industry with a particular passion for all things wine, it seemed a no-brainer to combine the two and open East End Wine Bar,” says Max Gawn.

East End will open everyday from Monday through to Sunday, and this newest addition to Hawthorn East will fast become one of the new local favourites. Trust me.
