There’s something delicious about smoked beers. Smoked anything really. Smoked meats.
Well, that’s all I guess.
Nevertheless, smoked meats and smoked beers are a good thing.
The Smoked Porter is the newest inclusion to the regular range from the Feral Brewing Company in the Swan Valley, WA.
Feral are the reigning champion large brewery, winning the title at last year’s AIBA (Australian International Beer Awards) dinner, so a new addition to their year round range indicates that when this one is on seasonally it’s a popular choice.
The most enjoyable character of beers that use smoked malts is usually the aroma, and this one is no exception. You get a little bit of sweet caramel and a healthy dose of smoke upon giving this one a sniff.
On the immediate taste you get a hit of bitter, chocolate roast, but the smoke from the malt quickly turns it into a savoury affair that rounds out this really solid robust porter.
Now that we’ve had a couple of cold nights (here in Melbourne, at least) it’s going to be a good one to accompany yourself with if you’re curled up in front of a fire.
Or with red meat. Yeah, a good steak with pepper sauce. That would be an ideal pairing.
Perhaps I’m just hungry.
