Something from our Taswegian brethren!
A few years ago we saw a few different beers from the Two Meter Tall Company in Hayes, Tasmania make their way across the Bass to Victoria, but it didn’t take quite like it should have.
Why? It’s hard to say. I’m prepared to say that us Vics weren’t ready for something as unique and delicate as the offerings coming across the on the Spirit.
Ashley at Two Metre Tall specialises in brewing sour and naturally fermented ales like the ones that he experienced tasting when travelling in the UK, USA and Belgium.
Now that we’ve matured and grown as people we understand and appreciate the nuances of sour beers and farmhouse ales.
Sour beers have taken off in the last 12 to 18 months. We love sour beers , we can’t get enough of them. So what better time to reintroduce the Two Meter Tall range to our shores than now?
We received a shipment of their Sour Cherry Ale which I’m looking forward to with great anticipation, a Dark Apple Beer which is gorgeous on multiple levels, and the beer that I am tasting today. The Derwent Aromatic Spelt Ale.
It pours cloudy and pale but an immediate indicator of what this beer is going to be like comes immediately on the aroma. Sour green apple and spices come straight through, it smells like a traditional gueuze sour beer.
The sour character is prominent all the way through, although it drinks very light and easy. Lemony with a little bit of spice across the palate this is a perfect hot weather beer. It seems like there isn’t much sweetness to the malt with this one, but it definitely is there, it’s just hiding behind the delicious sourness.
Yes, I’ll have more of these please.
