Congratulations on the wonderful news! The Design Files is launching its first print edition this October. How does it feel?
Thank you so much! It feels exciting and a little nerve wracking I must admit – we’ve been an online-only title for 16 years so it is a big leap! However, we’ve received such a wonderful response and we’re very grateful and encouraged by all the support!
You started The Design Files sixteen years ago. What’s one thing you’ve learned about business in that time?
I’ve learnt to trust my intuition. As a woman in business, and also as a solo founder (i.e. without business partners), throughout my career there have been times where I lacked a little confidence in my decision making, and assumed that other people must know better than me what decisions should be made in my business. In fact, I have learnt that no one knows my business better than I do, and I have become so much more confident in trusting my intuition. I still seek out expert advice, but these days I back myself to make the final call on big decisions. And I think I usually get it right – usually!
Who are your favourite Australian designers?
There are so many! As far an interior design goes, lately I’ve been loving the work of Studio A.mi, Brave New Eco, Arent & Pyke and Folk Studio.
When it comes to local furniture design, I love Tait, Ellison Studios, Grazia & co. And so many more!
What do you love about Melbourne?
I love Melbourne’s creative spirit! There is such a strong creative community here, and its super supportive. You can’t help but be inspired by all the beautiful artwork, architecture, interiors, and creative projects in this town.
Where are your favourite places in Australia to travel to, eat at and enjoy?
I do love Sydney for its sparkly water views and beautiful leafy streets. It’s got a completely different personality to Melbourne and I love it for that reason!
In Sydney, I love to stay in Surry Hills and pop in to all the design showrooms, cafes and restaurants. Paramount coffee is my go-to for coffee and breakfast, although I did just stumble across Good Ways Deli in Redfern the other day and had the most amazing sandwich there, so that might be a new favourite.
What does being Australian mean to you?
I think to me, being Australian is a mindset. I think it’s about being relaxed, open minded and hopefully pretty humble. Mostly I just feel so incredibly lucky to be Australian, we really do have it pretty good!
