I’ve always dreamt about writing a book. Apparently, everyone has a book in them, it’s just a matter of deciding what it’s about, and taking the time to sit and pen it.
Unfortunately for me, I think both the books I had in me have been penned by Emily Power, former Fashion Editor of the Herald Sun and fabulous girl about town.
Emily, working with the team at Slattery Media, has published two books in recent weeks, both in the fashion space. Ideal as a gift or something special for yourself, the two books are very different but essential reading for all Melburnians.
The Fashionista’s Guide to Shopping in Melbourne is a handbag sized bible detailing the very best Melbourne has to offer. From boutiques down hidden laneways to Bridal stores you didn’t know existed, the guide comes complete with maps and a cost indicator so you know exactly what to expect when you step through the front doors.
Over the weekend I visited Dejour Jeans in Brunswick and discovered a fantastic spot to pick up made to measure jeans – made in Australia, no less! – for only $50. Stocking all the colours of the season, the jeans are comfy and affordable, and I never would have known they existed without the guide. Win.
Emily, together with Antonia Magee, worked very hard on this project for months, ensuring all bases were covered when it came to selecting the best of the best to include in the book. The twelve chapters cover men and womenswear, homewares, beauty, shoes and everything in between.
And while the girls were busily putting together this guide, Emily was also working on another project; Fashion & Flemington.
2012 celebrates fifty years of Fashions on the Field at Flemington; where else in the world is the focus on clothing at the races more prominent than in Melbourne?
This beautiful coffee table book is a retrospective of hits and misses, the culture of the races and the celebrity that everyone embraces for the first week in November. From simpler days where women were not allowed at the track, to the multi-million dollar events that take place today, the book takes the reader through a visual journey of a quintessential part of Melbourne’s heritage.
Glossy photos and poignant words document the extraordinary tales of past winners and the juggernaut of today’s Fashions on the Field competition.
Following the publication of the titles, a new website, Fashionista’s Australia, has launched, covering everything from fashion (of course!) to life, people, home, music and men.
Both books will make many a lady (or man!) very happy this Christmas.
Onya Magazine has one copy of Fashion & Flemington to giveaway. To enter, email info@onyamagazine.com with the subject line ‘Fashion & Flemington’ and your full name and postal address. A winner will be drawn at random on Monday the 12th of November and will be notified of via email.
