What do you get when you cram Ruby Rose, her beloved dog Daisy, PR, models and media all angling to get a piece of the action on an iconic Melbourne tram? The epitome of a fabulous fashion week: organised chaos.
The petite Ruby Rose hosted a preview of her debut collection Milk & Honey on a charted tram from Melbourne Museum to the Docklands, picking up models at every stop – a unique take on the traditional runway.
“Trams represent Melbourne to me, trams are so iconic. I remember moving to Sydney … but one thing I really missed about Melbourne while in Sydney was trams. I think they scream Melbourne, so why not have a fashion show on a tram?” said Ruby.
While Ruby will be showing the entire collection at City Square on Sunday, yesterday’s sneak peak gave some insight into what’s to come for Milk & Honey. Put simply, forget the well-documented trends of nudes, florals and brights – Milk & Honey is on a whole new level.
Joking about this disparity, Ruby mused, “So what happened with me and my label? Did I miss the memo? [It has] a lot of ripped denim, studding and embellishment. Does that mean I’m not the greatest designer in the world?”
The pieces shown were obviously true to Ruby’s own casual and edgy style. Ripped and frayed denim shorts were given interesting detail in studded pocket inners left to hang out below the shorts, oversized boyfriend tees mixed and matched as dresses and tough skull inspired prints adorned t-shirts.
“It’s very much the clothing I would wear – eclectic and never on trend. Fun and festive and people will want to wear it to music festivals or to go see bands,” said Ruby.
Ruby didn’t manage to escape all trends though, with some amazing bright graphic prints appearing on a body hugging dresses and floaty silk tops.
My appetite has truly been whet for some more Milk & Honey on Sunday.
