After five days of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, the fifth being Myer’s Summer 2010 Launch, it’s official: I can’t wait another day for sunshine and the opportunity to wear the stunning clothes on offer.
Myer ambassadors Jennifer Hawkins and Kris Smith joined hostess for the show Lauren Phillips on stage, much to the delight of the growing crowd. While some of the ladies might have been hoping Kris would be showing off some of the looks on the runway (swimwear, preferably) both himself and Jennifer stayed fully clothed and on the sidelines as they narrated and commented on the outfits paraded. This was probably for health and safety reasons – if there had have been any more shown of the genetic jackpot winners the runway may have imploded.
A variety of stunning male and female models showcased Myer’s three biggest trends for summer, Modern Military, Cosmetic Bloom and New Nautical.
Modern Military
“Utility meets safari” was the thought behind the Modern Military trend, which is easily transferable from the office to the weekend. For the office, tailoring and structure is important in keeping the look 9 – 5, with khaki and camel colouring to keep you on trend. Gold is the perfect tone to accessories this look with – touches of gold hardware on bags and shoes were a glamorous way to breakup large blocks of khaki. A gold-flecked khaki body hugging mini-dress was a standout eveningwear option, with sharp structured shoulders still on trend, although Jennifer admitted they weren’t as bold as the previous season’s shoulder.
Cosmetic Bloom
The ‘new’ floral is none other than the graphic print interpretation of the traditional floral – bright, abstract, pastel, anything goes. This works especially well with the 1950′ inspired cuts and cinched waists; perfect for modern ladylike glamour. Peach, coral and other floral-esque colours accompanied the floral prints on the runway, with nude accessories the finishing touch. This trend is accessible for the men too, with Kris declaring, “real men do wear pink.” The outfits for the men were sophisticated, think cream chinos and a crisp shirt, teamed with boat shoes and a sweater. Champagne and a day on the yacht anyone?
New Nautical
Nauticals and summer go hand in hand and Myer’s selection of looks was nothing short of amazing. Sophistication and casual elegance are easy to achieve with classic navy and white stripes, tailored cigarette pants and patent black accessories. Lauren narrated an especially gorgeous Gossip Girl inspired look down the catwalk with many more Parisian-chic outfits to follow. Cosi by Jennifer Hawkins bikinis also made an appearance with a nautical themed pair being a favourite of Kris’ during the catalogue shoot in the Whitsunday’s. Jen commented that nautical doesn’t have to be the classic red, white and blue, you can take the essential elements of the trend, such as stripes and sailor buttons with your own favourite colours – Jen chose raspberry red piping for the aforementioned bikinis.
Whatever trend takes your fancy the most, remembering these basic guidelines should see you through the summer months in style. Wedges are back, featuring heavily across all trend categories, much to the delight of your calves; layering in neutral tones is a figure-friendly and chic option; if khaki doesn’t flatter, stick with strong tailoring and double breasted buttons for a subtle influx of military into your look.
And yes, Jennifer is just as stunning in real life as she is on-screen – don’t pretend you didn’t want to know!
