The L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and the City of Stonnington presented a series of Trunk Shows including Melbourne’s very own precious MICMO Trunk Show at Melbourne’s Prahran Town Hall. With MIMCO flying solo for the first time at the LMFF, the parade certainly did justice to the diligently designed collection for Season One of 2011, titled ‘Whispers & Anarchy’.
To set the scene, the ‘Whispers & Anarchy’ collection has 1950’s and 1960’s influences and is designed for the refined lady who has an off kilter approach to femininity and loves to stand out in a crowd.
2011 has marked MIMCO’s 15th anniversary and what better way to celebrate it than with an eclectic mix of fashion, amazing accessories and entertainment to bring the collection to life.
The fusion between classic ladylike and Latino street style of the late 50’s and early 60’s was “inspired by the Mods and the Beatniks of the late 50’s and early 60’s, channelling a clean and tidy aesthetic through neat satchels, sweet pumps and classic jewellery”, says MIMCO Creative and Commercial Director Cathryn Wills. “Still playing with the mid 20th century, we then looked to Latino influences on style during this era to create contrasting and eclectic, grunge street style,” Wills said.
Well, the Trunk show was just that – colour, nature inspired materials and bold silhouettes. As the lights fell and the dusk sun shone through the slits between the sky-high blinds, ‘MIMCO’ was projected onto the stark white walls and the beats started pumping.
With the models sporting specially designed PVC outfits including a-line skirts and clear trench coats, they provided the perfect canvas for the accessories and they were similar to the outfits used in the MIMCO campaign shoot that was set in Paris late last year.
Glitz and glamour was out in full force with all the latest must-have accessories strutting by on beautifully adorned wrists and necks. The full 360degree catwalk proved beneficial for guests to check out the latest luxurious handbags, fabulously embellished necklaces and stunning ankle-high and knee-length boots in suede and leather.
With a fabulous French singer opening the show and sporting the must have Temptress Earrings with delicately formed clear crystal cup chain teardrops, and a stunning gown, it was the perfect way to open the successful show.
MIMCO’s original Button Bags in pomegranate and the winter style Dylan Mini Zip-Top made grand entrances as did the Mini Day Bags in pomegranate and black. For the business woman the Prim Worker was a smash hit as was the Dandy Satchel and Beatnik Satchel, all in black and very assertive.
The limited edition and black leather Hepburn Day Bag with sparkle coming in the form of sequins, stone and sapphire tones blending in with bright gold, gunmetal and ever shining clear crystal was yet another dazzler on the catwalk with only 50 being produced world-wide.
Indigo and mustard have made a statement coming into Autumn and MIMCO embraced this offering a large range of the beautiful blue bags in-store and the delightfully deep and mysterious yellow accessories.
The Lunar Sac and Frida Pouche, in indigo and mustard respectively, were a smash hit as was MIMCO’s limited edition Frida Satchel where once again only 50 were produced world-wide. It donned woven taupe leather and all the gold trimmings. The Furry Cocoon was also a stunner leaving its mark well and truly on the catwalk in tempting neutral tones.
Evening bags were not ones to miss with the classic black Mesh Bow Bag and Mini Sequin Cocoon in both black and stonehedge making an appearance as well as the new season hip bags including the Dandy Hip Bag in both spruce and fresco and the Kahlo Hip Bag in camel.
Prancing around in the hottest heels was the next thing to turn our attention too. The vivacious Venus Wedges, patent black Golightly Pumps and Golightly Slingback soles had the crowd at their feet as did the much anticipated boot collection featuring a sumptuous mix of suede and leather.
The leather based Fractured Boot, Westside Boot, Black Widow Bootie, Diego Boot and Lunar Over the Knee Boot – all worth a check-out online – proved to be fashion hits with many guests already envisioning ensembles to accompany this fab footwear.
A manic mix of pearls, silver and gold was the theme for the tremendous jewellery on show. The Dandy Princess Neck with gunmetal and silver plated curb chain, ivory pearls, faceted beads and Czech glass beads as well as the removable Dandy Bow Brooch was show stopping.
The silver and black mix of the Hustler Chain, as well as the fantastic Fractured Twist Choker with multiple strands of luxe emerald, sapphire, rainbow and amethyst AB Czech glass faceted beads really turned the attention of fashionistas.
Limited edition jewellery items also made late entrances with the Tiffany Jewelled Wing Neck featuring the Indigo Czech beads and gorgeous crystals similar to the Tiffany Jewelled Wing Ear will be remembered by guests. The Galaxy Choker with the metal combinations sitting back with crystal interlocking pieces was another piece to swoon over as were the foxy fob watches in a silver and black mix.
Knitwear was also a standout with the versatile Vespa Wrap being a pointelle knit in wool acrylic and perfect to be worn as a scarf or to be wrapped all around you on those chilly nights. There was also an array of woolly hats and cuffs, not to mention the very wicked leather gloves.
To wrap things up, the heavy mixture between contrasting metals, pale tones, black and floral lace and the very funky leopard print tights saw MIMCO leave an impression upon the privileged sold-out audience. The first solo show was executed perfectly – much like snazzy Season One of 2011.
