Fashion with a cause – it inspires collaboration between the fashion industry and the non-profit sector to create mutually beneficial, exciting and innovative events. Yet most importantly, it gives face value to those less fortunate.
And so it is with great pleasure that Onya Magazine is excited to announce that on Wednesday the 1st of June 2011, a selection of Melbourne’s most accomplished design talent and students from the Whitehouse Institute of Fashion shall come together to present a fabulous evening of 1940s glamour, celebrating 65 years of community support from the Prahran Mission.
Since its establishment in 1946 the Prahran Mission has fed thousands of people with free breakfasts (for some their only meal of the day) and supported many more experiencing the trauma of mental illness, helping them reclaim their lives and giving them hope for a future they may have thought never existed. In celebration of their hard work and dedication they are throwing a party, and are pulling out all the stops.
The night will centre around a fashion show hosted by celebrity stylist Philip Boon and the formidable Jenny Bannister (the sassy duo behind Fashion Torque fame). The show will feature garments deconstructed and redesigned by prominent Melbourne fashion designers including; Bannister herself, Madam Virtue, Leopold, and Project Runway winner Anthony Capon.
Drawing on Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ as a source of inspiration (a new lady-like style adopted by post war women) each designer has been busy hunting down unique op shop delights and dutifully transforming them into exquisite outfits, fit for the fashion elite and ready for auction with all proceeds going to a great cause.
The event will be held at Red Bennies – Chapel Street’s answer to a traditional old-style jazz club, and fashionistas attending on the night are encouraged to dress in their forties finest (think wasp-waisted corsets and full skirts) where they can dance the night away, bid on fabulous fashion and go in the running for the best dressed, taking home $550 in prize money.
All monetary proceeds on the evening go towards the Prahran Mission, so for your chance to help out an exceptional cause spanning 65 years BOOK NOW at www.prahranmission.org.au.
