Flash Walk: The Spirit of the Black Dress

While Melbourne is always a cut above the rest in terms of fashion, this Tuesday an extra touch of class hit its streets. ‘The Spirit of the Black Dress’, a group dedicated to raising the profile of emerging Australian fashion designers, organised a ‘flash walk’. This innovative idea mixes the traditional catwalk with the concept of a flash mob, the recent phenomenon where people congregate to perform a dance in a public space.

Arriving fashionably late to a crowd of photographers and curious onlookers, a group of models dressed in glamorous, black dresses appeared at the top of the Flinders Street Steps and proceeded to ‘cat walk’ around the Swanston and Flinders street intersection, taking pauses to pose for photos and exhibit the beautifully crafted numbers.

Despite the hustle and bustle surrounding them – at one point a police van even drove by and scolded the models and media for blocking traffic – the models maintained their aloof charm and achieved exactly what ‘The Spirit of the Black Dress’ aims to do; bring unique, Australian-made fashion to the people.

The pieces included in the Flash Walk will be on display at Georges on Collins from March 12th to 16th as part of the L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
