The former Miss Universe, Jennifer Hawkins, pleased the crowd at Sidney Myer Music Bowl at the launch of Myer’s winter fashion parade earlier this week. Opening the show in a slinky, toga-like metallic bronze number by Toni Maticevski, Hawkins, accompanied by jazz singer and pianist Steve Clisby, set the tempo for the entertainment to follow.
With Hawkins as the only blonde to grace the catwalk, her fellow models presented as a troupe of guards in black military-style suits and donning consistent brunette hair styles – created with a temporary colouring mousse.
Hawkins also looked sultry in a slim-fitting, red leather dress by Charlie Brown, teamed with matching long gloves and a heavily jewelled ruby necklace.
Among other looks from the show were cross-over jackets in an array of greys and blacks and an occasional hint of dark blue made an appearance. Textured fabrics were dominant throughout the collections and subsequently ruffled, pleated and interesting combinations of layering proved popular among the designs.
Architectural shapes displayed a common theme across many garments with structured shoulders across jackets and dresses reflecting a sharp silhouette along with a combination of rough, metallic fabrics against dark charcoal shades for contrast. The one-shouldered dress has made a comeback, only this time in a more sophisticated and elegant style. Hawkins also impressed with a cut-out leather bodice by designer Manning Cartell, teamed with thigh-high boots.
The show demonstrated many key looks for the season including dark shiny fabrics, embellished and sequined finishes and silky black garments. Pinks, mauves, indigo blue and splashes of red and silver also featured predominantly across the show. For men, major winter garments featured included tight fit jeans, slim double-breasted suits, shiny dark leather jackets and fabrics with sheen, suggesting an edgy yet tailored look.
The finale showed off elegant dressing, with an array of pretty black, navy and white dresses perfect for any special occasion. Jennifer Hawkins graced the stage in a flattering one-shouldered, floor length, deep blue Matthew Eager dress.
Key trends for winter 2010:
The sophisticated look
Blazers and boyfriend jackets with sculpting and detail on the shoulder will be a key wardrobe item. Sharp, sleek and tailored pencil skirts offer another key look and basic wardrobe item to build on.
The classic coat
Invest in a good coat this season to get you through the colder months. From a black and white fine check statement piece to a slim silhouette, belted at the waist for a more tailored shape. Opt for a perfect winter trench or go for pure local luxury and get your hands on a cashmere coat in soft camel.
Go nude
Think pretty peaches, soft pinks and nude shades teamed with denim and darker colours for a contrasting look.
Time for texture
It’s all about layering to create a textured look. Think feathers and fur, embellished metallic pieces over basic black, block colours against prints, leather over soft floaty fabrics and ruffles and frills on the shoulders.
Add a dash of colour
The catwalk showed that bright orange, blood red, deep purple and electric blue are all suitable for winter to brighten up the otherwise gloomy days.
