Combine a strong theatrical theme with circus acts, dancing and an assortment of fashion from upcoming Australian designers and you get Catwalk Theatre – a fashion event with a distinct performance quality. The event was held on Tuesday evening at the sophisticated BMW Edge at Federation Square, in the heart of Melbourne.
Director and producer of the event Oscar Calvo claims the idea to do a showcase appealed to him.
“I didn’t want to do a conventional catwalk,” he said. By incorporating a circus feel with pink lighting and a strong theatrical dynamic, Catwalk Theatre was born. “I wanted to create a unique style and thought about how I could create an elegant event.”
The idea for the show came to Mr Calvo about six months ago and it has taken around four months of intense planning. “It takes a long time to get sponsors on board, find designers to fit the concept and do all the PR and marketing for the event,” he said.
The show fascinated the audience as it opened with an impressive performance by CircaNica graduate Jessica Ward. She executed balancing acts perched upon three canes and demonstrated controlled moves including handstands, contorted poses and positions displaying strength, grace and flexibility.
The show then moved on to a performance by a troupe of dancers from the Ministry of Dance who glided across the catwalk in jewelled peep-toe heels and black satin corset-style costumes. They wore elaborate headwear designed by Alexander Harper that ranged from a modern take on the classic headband incorporating lots of tulle, sequins and glitter.
A more mainstream approach on the traditional catwalk followed, with models strutting the latest designs by local talent including creations by Daniela Orlando, Nikolina Concepts, Lisa Maree and Justine Davis. Designs by Ever Layne were flattering and incorporated an array of pale cream shades and stark blacks. The collection generally showed lots of draping fabrics that hugged the body, along with ruffles and pleats that suggested a sophisticated and feminine look. Stand out garments included a slinky satin mauve skirt and wrap dress – the perfect pieces for a special occasion.
Eva Q Design never fails to disappoint. Her creations for the upcoming winter season reflect her distinct romantic style of dresses that we have come to expect from her previous collections. Only this time, she has paid attention to the finer details demonstrating interesting necklines, embellished sleeves and a creative use of ruffles and soft tulle throughout. A sheer grey was incorporated in some dresses, providing a subtle contrast to the palette of whites and creams. A notable garment was an eggshell coloured dress with a tucked hem, completed with a soft jersey shawl in pale lemon – ideal for keeping warm on those chilly winter evenings.
Distinctly different but also demonstrating practicality were garments by Made In Donald. The collection felt well considered as a set of items with a distinct style, incorporating basic black with a splash of bright canary yellow to add a touch a of character.
The general selection of footwear demonstrated a variety of looks but there was one recurring style – sky high platform heels. Ranging from jewelled and embellished peep-toe heels to knee length dark boots, all heels aimed to elongate the leg, going for a high fashion look. Silver and nude heels with ruffled detail were also on offer to compliment dressier garments.
