Celebrate Melbourne’s love affair with style, sophistication and sleek chic at the must-see fashion photographic exhibition, The Age of Fashion.
Presented by the World Trade Centre, WTC Wharf in conjunction with The Age, this free photographic exhibition offers Melburnians a tangible slice of history, documenting the influences, ideologies, icons and inspirations behind Melbourne’s signature style.
Curated by one of Australia’s most authoritative fashion voices and The Sunday Age Fashion Editor, Rachel Wells, the exhibition celebrates the pivotal moments, people and places that make Melbourne style so unique.
From the headline-grabbing style of Jean Shrimpton at the 1965 Spring Racing Carnival and the bustle of 1950s Flinders Lane textiles factories, through to the Melbourne-born fashion designers taking the international world by storm and the transformation of Chapel Street into an everyday catwalk, The Age of Fashion captures the changing face of Melbourne fashion.
“The Age of Fashion showcases Melbourne fashion in all its glory,” says curator Rachel Wells, “From the ragtraders of the 1950s – many of whom arrived from the ashes of the Holocaust and turned to garment manufacturing for a livelihood – to today’s crop of independent designers.”
Beautifully showcased over eight towers on the ground floor of the WTC Wharf building, The Age of Fashion features more than sixty black and white and full-colour images, and offers an honest and candid snapshot of Melbourne society.
In addition to re-living Melbourne’s fashion history, visitors to the free exhibition will also experience WTC Wharf, Melbourne’s newest meeting place. Set to change the way people experience Melbourne, WTC Wharf is the perfect spot to take in an exhibition, indulge in a meal, catch up with friends over coffee or just relax in a stunning waterfront location.
The Age of Fashion Photographic Exhibition is free and runs until Friday, April the 16th.
The WTC Wharf is located within the World Trade Centre (WTC) complex in Siddeley Street, Melbourne (just off Spencer Street). The WTC Wharf is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and is security monitored.
