I’ve happened across one of the sweetest handmade art and design companies I’ve ever laid my eyes on. If I don’t celebrate Pocket Carnival’s array of cute patterns, and outstanding environmental advocacy then I might well die – and the world just can’t afford to lose a review writer.
Penny Eager, Pocket Carnival’s illustrator, holds an imagination filled with teardrop-shaped birds, gently contoured lines, and characters that cheekily remind me of a very innocent Max from Where The Wild Things Are. Eager’s work is a collaboration between the sweeter elements of Japanese childrens animation and a whimsical illustrative style. Her designs are often complimented by simple patterns; stripes or spots, which feature solid pastel colours. The effect leaves you wanting to give Eager’s products an Eskimo kiss. Better still, Pocket Carnival’s materials include certified organic cotton, fabrics gathered from op-shops, store off cuts and family closets (each studied meticulously in lieu of being used), and post-consumer recycled paper. To ice the cake, Eager works in a studio powered using wind turbines.
