Last year, Bonds started a boob-esteem conversation and got Aussies talkin’ boobs. Now Bonds have created a cheeky new ’emoticon’ language to represent the A to G and everything in between on Aussie boobs – big, small, sporty, perky, mama, dazzling, tattooed, petite and more. They call them Boobicons.
Big = {O} {O} Sporty = /./ /./ Tattooed = ((©) (*) Dazzling = (@) (@) Uneven = (O) (o) Mama = (+) (+)
To bring these Boobicons to life, Bonds have teamed up with a unique group of women to collectively celebrate their boobs and get Aussie women to join them in embracing what they’ve got! We chatted with Jess Dempsey, fashion blogger and BONDS Boobicon ambassador.
What does it take to be a success in the fashion industry? My first job in fashion was with the Just Group working at Jay Jays at the Werribee Plaza, where I grew up, whilst I studied Visual Merchandising at RMIT. I went on to work for HUGO BOSS Australia as their Visual Merchandiser and from there jumped into styling. I styled some clients for the Logies and other award nights for around 3 years and during that time started my blog. The blog was a way for me to express my unique styling and share it with anyone who cared, it grew and grew and is now my full time job whilst being a mum of two.
What is your background in fashion?
It is all about staying true to yourself and remembering why you started and knowing what sets you apart. It is important to have a wealth of knowledge in your area of fashion and to have confidence in yourself.
What influenced you to get into blogging?
I was styling and I really wanted to share my unique style with anyone who cared. I went to Europe and as I was standing outside the Chanel store in the Rue Cambon, I was just in awe of the fashion history that was in front of me. That Coco Chanel herself walked that ground I stood on and now Karl Lagerfeld, I knew that anything was possible. I came home with a big suitcase full of new purchases and started styling myself and taking photos of how I put the looks together. Quite quickly people noticed!
How would you describe your style?
I think my style has evolved since the conception of my blog. I would have said feminine with an edge a few years ago but now I am older and a mum and I still have the edge but just more polished. I think I might stick to my moto of describing my style as ‘fashion confident’ meaning I am not afraid to try any trend.
What tips do you have for readers to find their own unique style?
To find what makes you you. We are all individuals and it is important to remember that, to find what it is that you love, what trends, what influences in life and what cuts, shapes, colours and styles suit you and own it.
What’s the trends for spring/summer and what colours should we be wearing?
I am loving pastels, we are seeing hints of pinks and lemon come through an otherwise white pallet. I would also embrace colour such as cobalt blue while we can style it back with all white. The trend is still that feminine, lady like silhouette with a modern twist.
What has been your biggest success to date?
I am so lucky that I am currently a BONDS Boobicon ambassador. This has been a great career highlight for me, working with a brand that I have known, loved and worn most of my life and now, so do my children.
Why is style so important?
It gives you a visual identity, it’s a great way of expressing who you are, your personality and it makes you unique.
What are the hottest up and coming designers?
I love a milliner called Danica Erard, remember that name as she will be taking the millinery scene over soon. I also love a girl called Queen Khan, she is so creative and pushes the fashion boundaries, Lady Gaga recently wore one of her pieces.
Who are your favourite Australian designers?
By Johnny is number one for me also AJE and Ginger and Smart.
