My name’s Brittany and I am a serial shopper.
Now, as a Fashion Editor, that probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s an activity that occurs far more often than it should, with no weekend (or some weekdays) complete without a perusal around the shops and hopefully ending with some kind of purchase. When I’m not out shopping, I’m probably thinking about shopping or pouring over fashion magazines, dreaming about what I wish I could buy next. And who can blame me, given just how great shopping is in Melbourne and temptation lurking in every laneway?
At some point, however, enough has to be enough. Spoilt at Christmas and making more than enough of the Boxing Day sales has left me with a wardrobe almost bursting at the seams (and a sparse looking bank account!) It’s time to stop, take a break and exercise some restraint.
And what better time to try it out than February? With the memories of our failed resolutions left far back in January, I’m sure we’re all familiar with the idea of FebFast – the 28 day detox designed to help kick bad habits as well as raising funds for youth addiction. Usually encouraging you to give up alcohol, caffeine, digital items or sugar, this month I’ll be setting myself my own detoxing challenge – a Fashion FebFast.
For 28 days I will not purchase a single new (or old) item of clothing, jewellery, shoes or accessories.
Am I crazy!? I hope not. By not introducing anything new to my wardrobe, I hope I’ll get a greater knowledge and appreciation of what I already own, and get creative with my styling.
It’s certainly going to be a challenge, given that this month I have a wedding, my first visit to Sydney and numerous 21sts… not to mention my favourite pair of jeans tearing the day before the challenge starts. All I can say is thank goodness it’s the shortest month in the year!
Fashion FebFast Rules
- No clothes, jewellery, accessories or shoes can be bought from 12am February 1st – 11:59pm February 28th 2014
- This includes second hand and vintage clothing
- For special occasions, clothes can be swapped or borrowed from friends or family
- Overwhelming desire to shop can be channeled into accompanying and helping a friend enjoy a shopping spree
- All good tips must be passed on to Brittany, who will probably be needing them by the end of the first week
