If your skin is looking a little lacklustre, it may be time to get back to basics. Beauty Expert and Burt’s Bees Senior Brand Manager Nicola Quinn shows you how to detox your skin correctly.
When your skin is looking its age (or older), dry, grey or dull, it may be time to approach a ‘skin detox’. Like a cleanse for your insides, a skin detox requires you to give your skin a break from the everyday stresses which can cause it to become tired and rundown.
Clean your fridge
We don’t mean you need to get your rubber gloves on – instead, get rid of any sugar laden, fried or processed foods. They may be tasty, but these foods, or ingredients, can increase the amount of oil your skin produces and add to your toxin load.
Go shopping
Now that you’ve got a clear fridge, it’s time to load it up with fresh fruit and vegetables. If you’re not sure where to start, just go for the brightest colours in the fruit and veg aisles. The bright hues in fruit and veg are caused by antioxidants, which means you’ll be boosting your body, and your skin’s ability to fight against free radicals caused by poor diet, pollution and weather. Make sure you include strawberries and blueberries – these contain collagen boosting vitamin C, plus they’re a great low-calorie snack. While you’re at the supermarket consider buying some herbal teas to swap out with your coffee. Green tea and aloe vera are known to help neutralise toxins in your body. Along with drinking at least 2 litres of filtered water a day, teas are a great way to enhance your detoxification process.
Get scrubbing
One reason your skin may look tired, or is dry, dull and flaky, is the presence of dead skin cells which can build up, regardless of how thoroughly your clean your face each day. Use a facial scrub to unblock your pores and remove dead skin cells.
Put on a mask
Clay masks are ideal for drawing impurities out from your skin and reducing the amount of oils and sebum, which can clog up pores and causes blemishes. Apply Burt Bee’s Detoxifying Clay Mask, which contains a natural blend of charcoal, which helps to absorb impurities and acai, rich in antioxidants and nutrients.
