Have you been looking for a beauty directory that lists Australian made and owned ethical brands and products? Well search no more because the only comprehensive directory available in Australia has launched – and it’s good.
The book, titled Ethical Beauty for the Australian Green Goddess is the result of the collaboration of Y-Yo director Helen Coates and the face behind Miss Green’s Wardrobe, Rebecca George.
The pocket sized beauty directory comes complete with product and contact information for over 100 ethical Australian beauty brands, as well as tips and DIY beauty secrets from the authors.
All brands listed in the book are Australian made and owned products that adhere to an ethical practice in the production of their goods. Co-author Rebecca George says that this is the main focus of the directory that positions it as a niche in the market. “Our main focus was to include home grown brands that are also ethical,” she said.
The brands featured in the directory had to qualify against set criteria to make the cut. Winning aspects included the use of all-natural ingredients, products not tested on animals, no harsh ingredients and using less or no chemicals. “Currently in Australia, there isn’t anything like this available. Countries overseas who have published similar books tend to stick to featuring their own local brands,” said Ms George.
For small beauty companies, the chance to be featured in the directory offers them some exposure and the chance to inform consumers about their products. “Small brands find it really hard to get recognised so this is something that can help put the word out there that there are options for selecting ethical products,” explained Ms George.
With over 100 brands listed in the directory, Ms George admits that even she wasn’t aware of the wide range available across the country before engaging in research for the book. Perhaps the range demonstrates a reflection of the beauty industry moving forward in the ethical sector. “People are becoming more aware and more educated so part of this move is probably a response to consumer demand,” said Ms George.
According to Ms George, ethical brands and products are not that easy to find and having something like the Ethical Beauty for the Australian Green Goddess should prove quite valuable. “The directory eliminates the research process for readers and gives them the advantage of searching for something that they want,” she said. The book also includes specific brands that follow vegan related ethics. “The book includes vegan friendly brands too which are often hard to find,” said Ms George.
Ms George admits that she learnt an incredible amount about the industry through researching the book. Her biggest piece of advice is to keep an open mind about the beauty products we select. “We tend to stick to the brands we know because they’re the only ones we see on the shop shelf. But there really are so many more options out there.”
