Dr Ginni answers and explains all you need to know about microneedling and why you should incorporate it into your skincare routine safely…
What are microneedles?
Dissolving microneedles are tiny little needles designed to deliver a payload of amazing skin actives directly INTO the skin because each microneedle contains these ingredients and they’re released as the needles dissolve.
Most dissolving microneedles are made from Hyaluronic acid these days because this rockstar ingredient is so well tolerated by the skin, has low rate of immune system reactions and has its own skin healing properties.
The needles are deep enough to get past the outer (hard-to-penetrate) stratum corneum into the skin itself but too shallow to reach the nerves and cause pain. They’re tiny enough to allow effective drug delivery but not leave any permanent scars, and are easily self-administered at home.
Why are they all the buzz now and how frequently should we incorporate them into our beauty regimes?
There have been in-clinic treatments around for a while. Metal microneedles on a roller were rolled over your skin to create microchannels and then a solution or serum would be applied after. But they could be painful, and in the wrong hands caused pain and increased the risk of infection and bleeding.
New technology has taken microneedling to the next level allowing us to create at-home patches of microneedles that dissolve into the skin at home minus the mess and the risk and delivering the anti-aging or anti acne ingredients at the same time as the needling. Dissolving microneedles are made from Hyaluronic acid these days because it is so well tolerated by the skin, has low rate of immune system reactions and has its own anti-aging and skin healing properties. Hyaluronic acid microneedles can have anti-ageing ingredients (like ESK’s ageless microneedle patches) or anti-acne ingredients (like ESK’s Spotless microneedle patches) embedded in their tips and start dissolve when they meet the water in your skin’s epidermis.
Spotless patches are ideal for early stage zits to start the healing process or even get rid of them altogether.
Ageless patches used 2-3 times a week improve skin texture and reduce fine lines and wrinkles in a bout 6-8 weeks.
Why are they beneficial?
Dissolving microneedle patches can get past the efficient outer layer of the skin called the stratum corneum. This allows the microneedles to deliver not only the anti-inflammatory, wound healing and anti-ageing hyaluronic itself into the skin, but all the ingredients contained in each microneedle!
