Households across Victoria are celebrating in response to the Victorian Government’s recent decision to allow privately owned e-scooters to be ridden across the state. The government has just announced it has extended its e-scooter shared-scheme trial for six months and from 5 April, privately owned e-scooters can now be used under strict trial rules.
Many people have welcomed the decision as living costs soar and commuters look for cheaper ways to get around town and back and forth from work.
“We are really excited for the people of Victoria. E-bikes and e-scooters are such a great way to travel. Not only are they super convenient to get around on, they are really economical too,” Decathlon Australia, Wheels Commercial Director, Tamara O’Donnell said.
“The Government of Victoria has been trialing hire e-scooters in Melbourne and Ballarat. A lot of our customers in Melbourne have been eagerly awaiting the outcome of the trial and are excited to hear that they can finally ride an e-scooter of their own.
“Even though having your own e-scooter is now possible in Victoria, it is important that everyone understands how to pick the right one for your needs and keep yourself safe in accordance with the rules.”
According to Ms O’Donnell, there are some important rules that must be followed. You can legally ride your private e-scooter if you are over 16 years of age and:
- you ride on shared-use paths and roads up to and including 60 km per hour,
- you wear a helmet,
- you don’t ride under the influence of drugs and alcohol,
- you ride up to a maximum of 20 km per hour; and
- you are not using your mobile phone or carrying a passenger.
“It is really important to remember that you are not allowed to ride on footpaths. So, it doesn’t matter where you are, you have to stay off footpaths. Shared-use-paths are ideal,” Ms O’Donnell said.
