During the Middle Ages – as fabrics and tailoring techniques advanced – it was possible for men to start wearing trousers. This was the beginning of clothing being gendered. In the 19th century, skirts and fashion etiquette was very strict.

Moving forward into the 20th, and 21st, century the skirt went through so many different styles. Fashion reflects society and skirts are a fascinating example of this. In the 1920s, Coco Chanel designed a skirt just below the knee, which was very practical for women at the time. Skirt lengths would continue to constantly change over the decades. They were made shorter in the war due to fabric restrictions. Dior created the pencil skirt in the 1950s, a silhouette we still see today.
