Onyapreneurs: Josh Culnane, Founder of The Organic Project

Josh Culnane - The Organic Project

What inspired you to launch an all Australian natural health and beauty store?

I love to keep fit and healthy I think Australia has some of the best natural health and beauty products in the world, so I wanted to showcase these emerging brands to the rest of the world. Also, I think now people are only just starting to realise that it’s just as important to use natural and organic skincare as it is to put organic food into our bodies and the response so far has been very positive.

Every product you stock is organic – why are organic products so important to you?

All products we stock are either natural or organic and all free from nasties, which is vital to our health and wellbeing. The natural and organic movement is rapidly increasing all around the world and I believe it’s here to stay. We are only just now realising the detrimental health impacts from eating and using products that have nasty chemicals in them. I also think documentaries like ‘The Human Experiment’ narrated by Sean Penn are finally showing us just how bad for our health everyday chemicals can be.

What did you do prior to launching The Organic Project?

I was lucky enough to travel around the U.S. for an extended period of time. This travel also inspired me to create The Organic Project as I saw that the U.S. had really embraced the organic and wholefood movement and thought that this is exactly what Australian consumers might also like to see.

Did you face any challenges in launching The Organic Project?

Yes, like any start-up company we learnt a lot of invaluable lessons in the early stages. We are still learning everyday and I’m hopeful we will continue to learn new things everyday.

What advice do you have for anyone wanting to create an online business?

Just do it. I know that’s now a major brands tag line, but really you just need to get out there and give it a go. I believe that the regret of not following your passions far outweighs the feeling of failure.
