Tell us about Service Today.
Service Today is a residential plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling company that offers the professional service everyone always hopes to receive when they pick up the phone to a tradesperson. We have over 180 employees servicing homeowners’ emergency and maintenance needs across Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
The Service Today brand was established in 2014. Since then, the business has grown to include electricians, heating and air conditioning technicians.
What inspired you to start Service Today?
Aussie homeowners needed reliable and trustworthy technicians in their home and only wanted to call a single number or company to help them out in their home and business. We saw a gap in the market that we could fill, especially when it comes to tradies who can give the property owner a fixed upfront cost.
Tell us about your career and background.
Early in my career, I recognised that being a skilled tradesperson wasn’t enough in today’s competitive world. My strong belief in reliable on-time performance and predictable, honest prices led me to found Service Today.
Backed by my experience as a licensed plumber, Service Today has expanded into one of Australia’s leading emergency home service businesses, with over 180 employees in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Describe a typical workday for you.
Most days, I start by reading customer reviews – be they good or bad. I acknowledge the good and create measures to solve the bad, so they don’t happen again. Just because the good reviews far outweigh the bad, it does not mean we should dismiss or ignore the occasional bad review. When there’s a chance to make a change, I first find out if it’s a people problem or process problem, get to the bottom of the issue, and use it as a training opportunity.
Throughout the rest of the day I handle any business queries and requirements my team has for me and try to sit in with each department to ensure they feel supported at all times. Catching up with each team helps our business evolve and allows us to keep moving forward together.
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
Don’t fall into something just because you think it’s going to make you a lot of money, do something you love and offer a product or service that people are going to remember. Have a mentor, follow someone who has walked the walk. They will have already made all the mistakes, and you can learn from them.
What’s next for you and Service Today?
We are looking to expand our services over the whole of Australia. Subject to New Zealand opening the borders, we have a view to expand into the country to make Service Today an ANZ business.
