While some might enjoy relaxing holidays by the pool, Melbourne’s new day tour company, Tripfit Adventures, offers action-packed day tours for those who prefer to keep active. From mountain biking, kayaking and yoga in the Mornington Peninsula to hiking and wine tasting in the Yarra Valley, Tripfit’s adventure tours are proving popular amongst tourists and locals alike.
Tripfit Adventures was founded by Melbourne local, Richard Nutt, who wanted to combine his two greatest passions – fitness and travel. After noticing a gap in the market for active day tours that provided a range of activities, the concept of Tripfit Adventures was born.
Tell us about TripFit.
Tripfit Adventures offers action-packed day tours for those who prefer to keep active. While some like to spend their holidays lazing by the pool, our world class experiences are designed for those who like to work up a bit of a sweat, while also taking in some of the best sights Melbourne has to offer.
We combine different activities into full day itineraries with the aim of helping people feel good to be alive. For the really adventurous, we have tours with mountain biking and kayaking on the Mornington Peninsula, or for those who prefer a slightly more relaxed experience, they might choose hiking following by wine tasting in the Yarra Valley. There are tours to suit all activity levels.
What inspired you to start TripFit?
I launched Tripfit because I wanted to do something I was passionate about. And Tripfit combines my two greatest passions; fitness and travel. I’ve been on a number of day tours myself, both in Australia and overseas, and for me, spending a whole day on a bus just isn’t an enjoyable way to see the sights. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who felt that way.
So with that in mind, we (my wife and I) wanted to give tourists – and locals too – the opportunity to experience Melbourne differently. With so many bus tours and winery tours already on offer, we wanted to create really tangible experiences that leave people with lasting, positive memories – and the feedback so far has been phenomenal.

Tell us about your career and background.
I studied business at Monash and had a 12 year career at various corporates including RACV, EY and Telstra. I learnt a lot during that time, most notably that I didn’t enjoy spending my days sitting at a desk. After thinking about it for a number of years, I finally bit the bullet in early 2017 and quit my job in search of something different. TripFit was born a couple of months later.
Describe a typical work day for you.
If I’m running an activity that day I’ll be up at 5:30am to get ready for a 7am pick up in the city. Don’t feel too sorry for me though: the rest of my day will be spent hiking, kayaking, visiting wineries and sharing the most beautiful parts of Melbourne with interesting people from all over the world. If it’s my ‘day off’ I’ll be busy running the back-end of the business including marketing, replying to customers and planning future adventures.
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
1. Stop thinking about doing it and start doing it. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.
2. Accept that it won’t all be peaches and cream – I have to work most weekends which is annoying, but on balance I’m much happier now than I was as a nine-to-fiver.
3. Build a product / service you can be proud of.
What’s next for you, and TripFit?
We’re already off to a bumper season so we’re currently recruiting for more adventure hosts for the summer period to help us deal with the demand. Right now it’s mostly just me running the tours, so with extra hands we’ll soon be running multiple activities per day.
The next step will be multi-day activities for those who want more adventure than you can pack into a single day tour. After that, I’d love to take Tripfit to other locations in Australia, and maybe one day take the brand internationally. TripFit in the Bahamas? Sounds pretty good to me.
