Tell us about Premax.
Premax is a performance skincare brand. We develop products to help condition and protect the skin for the rigours of exercise and sport. Our product range includes anti friction balms which are used to help prevent chafing and blisters, sports specific sunscreen, a warm up cream with a no-scent warming agent, recovery cream that helps the soothe and accelerate repair of the skin, a facial cream to protect from the wind and cold, a shampoo and conditioner for chlorine affected hair and a range of massage creams and lotions for health professionals!
What inspired you to start Premax?
As a sports and exercise physiotherapist I found that many of my athletes and patients would be grateful for my treatments, but not the creams, oils and rubs that I used. They were greasy, didn’t allow the skin to breathe and clogged pores. Using these products distracted people during sport and everyday life – and impaired performance, so I decided to do something about it.
Tell us about your career and background.
I’m a sports and exercise physiotherapist who’s worked with active people of all levels for over 20 years. At the elite level I’ve worked with teams such as the Hawthorn Football Club and Australian Winter Olympic Team, however I’ve thoroughly enjoyed keeping ‘anyone and everyone’ active by consulting out of my practice in central Melbourne. I’m also a co-founder of an online education platform for physios and health professionals called Learn.Physio.
Describe a typical work day for you.
I’m an early starter and get out of bed between 5-5.30. I grab a black coffee and use the first hour of the day to get a head start on work. No one rings or emails at this time, so I get a lot done! After getting my girls on the way to school, I usually hit the pool or the gym for an hour and then head into the office (or home if I’m working there). At that point anything goes! I can be doing anything from visiting customers, to writing copy for marketing materials, to developing new products or attending team meetings. I enjoy the variety – no two days are the same!
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
If you can, start small and prove the concept before cashing in all your chips and going for it. Sometimes this can’t be possible, however if you’ve got the ability to start something in your spare time – even if it’s just building your community of potential customers this will allow you to not only validate the business idea but also learn and develop fundamental business skills (which are hugely important). Plenty of start ups and businesses fail not because of the product or service, but poor financial management, suboptimal customer service or lacklustre leadership and management etc.
What’s next for you, and Premax?
Much of the same. My team and I are relishing the challenge of leading and defining skincare in sport and whilst we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, there’s plenty of room to continue to build not only Premax, but the conversation and awareness around keeping the skin fit during sports and exercise. Although I’m not as hands on as I once was as a physio, I still feel that we’re helping people achieve their physical goals and for me, that’s a pursuit I’ll always enjoy.
