Established in 2014, bee one of a kind offers a collection of handcrafted natural skincare and self care products designed to inspire women to prioritise their well being and practice self kindness.
What inspired you to start Bee one of a kind?
It was just after giving birth to my daughter in 2015 that I had suffered postnatal depression quite severely that my mental emotional and physical health had taken a toll and I was struggling to reestablish myself as a woman and find a sense of purpose. I wanted desperately to occupy myself and find a way to replenish my well-being. I was feeling quite lost but I found comfort in making my own baby products that were toxic free and safe for Luna. Something in me was reignited and I started venturing in making my own natural skincare products not only for myself but family and friends.
Tell us about your career and background.
I studied Natural Therapies back in 2014 and wanted to use my skills and knowledge to create and formulate simple yet sophisticated everyday natural products using locally sourced ingredients. I have always had a passion for creative design. Growing up, I was always in awe of my Nonna who would insist on providing for the family and made everything from scratch. My fondest memory was watching her make soap that she would then use for absolutely everything from laundry, to cleaning dishes and even wash our hair with! She would take such care and precision in mastering her recipe and soap making became a family tradition each year. I was very much inspired by my Nonna to follow her footsteps and have my own legacy to share with my daughter Luna.
Describe a typical work day for you.
A typical day very much varies from stock preparation, product development and fulfilling, orders and dispatch, administration tasks, follow-up with current stockists. For me personally, I love the hands on tasks and making the products. My studio is my sanctuary and has become a place where I can focus and find my zen.
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
I would highly recommend having a business plan. Even if it’s just focused around ideas and goals. Invest and seek professional guidance from those who have been in a similar industry, who can not only share advice, but offer constructive feedback on areas to improve or really focus on. I have benefited from having a mentor who not only oversees my business plan, but keeps me accountable and motivated. I would also encourage anyone who is starting a business to never stop learning. It is great to outsource, but have some understanding of what’s required in the background ie, marketing, SEO, target market etc.
What’s next for you, and Bee one of a kind?
My dream is to see bee one of a kind in a wellness retreat and/or boutique department store. My plan is to keep going, never giving up. Days when it gets overbearing and overwhelming (and it sure does) I rest. I take some time off go realign and recenter. That’s the key.
