Tell us about The Lucy Rose Clinic.
The Lucy Rose Clinic is the largest integrative thyroid and hormone clinic in Australia. We combine the latest scientific research, with functional pathology and natural medicine in order to determine the underlying cause of our patients’ health challenges and then put together a personalised treatment plan to help their bodies heal, reverse their symptoms and get them back to feeling great and living their life to the fullest.
What inspired you to start The Lucy Rose Clinic?
As many people who start businesses, I was inspired to start the Lucy Rose Clinic by my own and my family’s health challenges. I experienced lots of stress in the GFC that led to my own thyroid problem (although I didn’t know it at the time). All of a sudden I was experiencing weight gain, demotivation, foggy thinking and extreme fatigue. The test results my GP ran kept coming back normal and they kept telling me I was depressed, which I knew I wasn’t. This is actually something we hear all the time from our patients. So, I travelled to the US and met with various integrative doctors and learnt all about thyroid, their treatment protocols and testing approaches. I realised that this information wasn’t widely available in Australia and as a result a wide range of people were suffering undiagnosed and untreated.
Tell us about your career and background.
I actually started out my career wanting to be a counsellor, I hadn’t even heard of Naturopathy and had no idea what naturopaths did until I met someone who was going to an Open Day at a college in NZ, and I guess you could say I found my calling. I studied a Bachelor of Health Science in Complementary Medicine and diplomas in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Massage Therapy and Nutrition. I had two ventures into entrepreneurship, the first was the Herbal Health Centre, an integrative health centre in NZ offering various therapies with a dispensary and natural health shop and my current Australian clinic and pathology lab – The Lucy Rose Clinic and Functional Health Screening, which I founded in 2012.
Describe a typical work day for you.
My day used to start with reviewing patient notes and then consulting throughout the day but now I start with my to-do list and a review of my cash flow and financials. I usually catch up each morning with one of my managers or consultants and my afternoons tend to be dictated by what happens in the mornings more than anything. It’s busy and varied and I love it!
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
- Know your strengths and limitations – and don’t be afraid to bring in people that know more than you or have different skill sets to enable the business to grow.
- Learn to manage how you feel and react to challenging circumstances so that stress doesn’t get the better of you.
- Plan, document and execute.
- Always look for the opportunity.
What’s next for you, and The Lucy Rose Clinic?
One of the great things about this business is that there are always so many projects happening at one time. We are looking at international expansion, developing our own product ranges, and collaborating with a local University to release research papers so we can share with the wider scientific and natural health community the effectiveness of the interventions and protocols that we have developed over our years treating patients.
Our goal is to help more people!
