Kind Is Cool was born out of Amber’s desire to bring a little bit of kindness into a world that felt quite dark to her, following months of workplace bullying which opened her eyes to the first-hand impacts of bullying as an adult.
Tell us about your career and background.
I have done many things, but I’ve always been creative! I am a hairdresser by trade, I used to do market stalls with handmade crystal necklaces and I have worked in the TV and music industry. It just goes to show, your career path is never set in stone – it’s never too late to start something new.
Describe a typical work day for you.
I have two young boys so mornings are hectic with the school lunches and the school run. Then, it’s off for my favourite almond milk and Carob (I know – everyone thinks it is weird) from our local bakery! The rest of my day is usually split between lots of admin, packing orders and I always try to fit in some designing and brainstorming as getting creative is one of my favourite things! We have amazing staff who of course support on all of that too.
The time always flies and soon enough it’s time to pick up the boys, and head off to after school activities which we have most nights. Once we’re home, we begin the dinner, bath and bed routine. Once the kids are in bed, you can find me on the couch watching Miriam Margolyes, The Australian Dream or binging Schitts Creek for a laugh!
What advice do you have for those wanting to start a business?
Make sure you have a plan and then go for it! Know that it is hard work but it will pay off. The most important thing is making sure you have some epic people in your corner that will cheer you on and drown out the self-doubt.
How has Afterpay supported Kind Is Cool’s growth as a small business?
Afterpay has supported us in many ways, allowing our customers to split their payments and manage their spending, it’s hugely popular with our customer base – making up around 20% of our sales! We’ve also been lucky to have been a part of the Afterpay Support Small program, with Afterpay promoting us on their social media and online it has been amazing exposure.
What’s next for you, and Kind Is Cool?
We are working on new designs and looking at different social injustices to bring awareness to and spark important conversations about! We also have another collab with the beautiful Cungelella girls, and some different garments coming…so keep an eye out!
