Many of us have been in a situation where we have thought about quitting our jobs. Why? What is lacking in your job? What more do you want? The answers to these questions are different for everyone and not often straightforward. So, is it time to quit your job? Here are some things consider when trying to make up your mind.
You dread going to work
Do you like going to work? Do you hate going to work? If you wake up each morning dreading the day, it’s a good sign you need to move on. Disliking work can be attributed to many things, tasks, role, colleagues, office environment and more. If you can’t fix the issue, is there reason to stay?
You keep talking about your job (in the wrong way)
Vent, vent, vent. You keep talking about your job in a negative way. Look back on the conversations you have had with colleagues and outside of work. Are you complaining about your workplace, your role, your boss or something else? Your job should be bringing you happiness, not negativity.
Procrastination
Yes, we all procrastinate on some occasions. However, somebody that doesn’t want to be in their role will take it a step further. If you are not engaged in your day to day work, you must find out why. Is it the tasks, the clients, or are you just bored? Do you need a change? Scrolling through Facebook and wasting time is general are key indicators that you want to leave.
Your health
Keeping an eye on your health is always essential. You might not realise this, but a job you don’t like can start taking a toll on your health. For example, you are working long hours and have no work life balance, no time to exercise, and are getting little sleep. No job is worth sacrificing your health.
No progression
Don’t waste time in a role that offers no opportunity to move up and see growth. You want something in return for your effort and hard work. A company that won’t support the progression of your career will end up hurting your career. If you are looking for progression in your career, try taking recognised online courses with Upskilled.
Negative environment
Nobody wants to be stuck in a toxic environment. When co-workers are complaining non-stop and your boss is always unhappy, it’s not a great working environment. If you can’t identify who is creating this negative environment, it could be you. You want to get out soon because a negative environment can start to affect your judgement regarding your career path.
Overqualified
There is no shame in taking a subpar job just to get by. However, this soon gets old, you become tired, bored and even remorseful. You shouldn’t ever feel stuck. Chances are you don’t have long-term aspirations to stay in this role anyway. If you are on already on job sites looking for new work, consider that a negative indicator.
Company culture
Culture is essential to many people. While some people still want a traditional and structured culture, many people are leaning towards something more flexible. Wanting or needing something more flexible and not getting it will cause issues. Furthermore, knowing you can get that elsewhere will further hinder your perception of your current role. Before you quit, see if you can negotiate some new scheduling agreements.
You need to justify your job
Finally, you keep justifying your job to yourself, your friends, and you family. For example, “my role is terrible, but the pay is good”, or “my boss is dreadful, but we get healthy snacks at work”. Whatever it is, you feel the need to justify why you are staying there.
