Living in the suburbs has it’s own unique set of hurdles, as opposed to living in the city. Part of the charm of the suburbs is the safety it offers for families and children, when compared to living areas closer to city regions. Break-ins are an unfortunate fact of life in either setting, however, suburbs have a subtle advantage over their city-dwelling counterparts by virtue of their abundance of space. This allows for all sorts of fixes for the home security problems an average, everyday house would face, such as a lack of screen doors. If this is either not likely or possible, consider Global Guardians who can look after your home while you are away.
We’ve put together an article of tips for protecting your home against break-ins, in the hopes it will help you to increase security at your place of residence and give you a greater peace of mind when relaxing at home.
Screen Doors
One of the first things that comes to mind for many people when they think about security at their home is screen doors. We are all very familiar with them, and they give us an extra layer of protection through which to talk when we have a visitor at the door.
Screen doors on your front and back entryways are a great way to protect your house and your valuables from would-be thieves by creating a stab-proof barrier between them and the hefty wooden door with a lock on it.
Cameras
While a little pricier, cameras are a great addition to your security suite, and they give you the peace of mind to know that you’ll have video proof in case anyone breaks in, or anything untoward occurs.
Even better, the footage from a security camera can catch car accidents out front of your house as well, so any street-parking related incident will be immediately resolved with video footage instead of one person’s word against the other’s.
Motion Detectors
Motion detectors are great for inside the home and outside, and when combined with security lights they can be a massive deterrent to thieves. Motion detectors detect motion, as their name suggests, and use that to trigger other security systems, such as alarms or lights.
Many robbers commit robberies only when convenient, so security lights and motion detectors are a good way to indicate that your home is well protected, and to steer clear.
Storm Windows
Modern storm windows are very different to their old fashioned counterparts. A modern storm window set can be opened or closed from inside the house only, are usually made of metal, and are often reinforced to resist incredible wind speeds and physical impacts from tree branches and other storm related debris.
This makes them wonderful for protecting against break-ins, because bricks or other heavy objects that are occasionally thrown through windows are deflected by the metal barrier protecting the glass now, and this makes your home safer for all.
Timer Lights
Timer lights have been around for a while, but for extended trips away from home they’re still a great idea. The basic premise is that most potential burglars won’t enter a house if they think someone is home, so the timer lights turn themselves on and off at preset times to give the illusion of someone being home at all times.
The same system can work for radios, TVs, and computers too, making it seem like your house is being looked after while you’re away.
Dogs
A distinctly difficult, but effective deterrent.
Dogs are lovable, friendly, joyous and often a lot of hard work when compared with the other items on this list, but all the same they represent an option for security as well. People don’t go into yards or houses with home protection dogs, because dogs attack and make a lot of noise when an intruder comes around, making them an effective security system.
Neighbours
Finally, the cheapest and easiest option for looking after your home would be to get to know your neighbours. Having them keep an eye on the house for you while you’re away is a good way to ensure your belongings don’t get stolen while also keeping yourself from installing a several-thousand-dollar security system.
With these choices, your home can be safe again for a deceptively low price and you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that spending time away from home doesn’t mean burglaries and break-ins.
