You’ve just bought a house, congratulations! Now comes the many steps you need to take before moving into your new home, and settling in for the long haul. The first steps in this exciting process can be fairly straightforward, but the rest can get some people jumbled up and confused. Moving forward from that momentous step can seem like rushing, or you might find yourself with so many things to do that you freeze up. To help you with this difficult task, we have put together a set of steps to take before moving into your new home, and we hope that it can offset the hugeness of the road ahead.
Furniture Purchase
Buying furniture is not always necessary, but it is strongly recommended for a new home. New furniture is exciting, it brings feelings of moving forward and enjoying yourself, as well as encouraging personal growth. Stop hanging onto the trappings of your old life, donate your old furniture to a charity, if it’s in good shape, and move forward with this new chapter of your life.
This mindset can also help you to get rid of things that you’ve been needlessly hanging onto as well, such as a garage full of clutter and boxes of stuff. You won’t want your new home to be filled with the same junk that your old home was full of, so upgrading your furniture is a great starting point for purging the old stuff in favour of the new.
First Shop
Once your home is furnished, it’s time to do that first shop. This is best done all at once, and while it will be expensive, it will also be one of the biggest shopping trips you do. You need to buy everything, and I mean everything, for your home in this large first trip.
Many people do food shops once a fortnight, but this has to cover all the things that you never buy but always have, like soy sauce, or pepper, or mustard powder. The ingredients that are so key in so many meals, but used in such small quantities that they never get used up. You can do this over a long period of time, in many smaller shopping trips, but one large one at the start is the best way to get it all out of the way and free up your mind for more important things.
Insure Your Home
Things like insuring your home, and its contents, are more important things that the previous two entries on this list. Your home contains not only you and your loved ones, but all of your worldly possessions, which makes them fairly important to protect. Protecting your home against burglary and natural dangers like floods, extreme winds, bushfires, or unusually large hailstones is key in not going bankrupt if one of these things is to befall you. Some insurance policies will require you to put locks on the windows, most will require you to have security doors, but all are worth the peace of mind you’ll get from knowing your home and it’s contents are safe.
With these tips, you have completed the post-purchase checklist and readied yourself for your move-in. With these things out of the way, you can get on with a nice, peaceful life in your new home.
