If you’ve imagined there must be a better way to get around central Melbourne, it’s possible you haven’t yet imagined a fun, fast and environmentally sustainable alternative: Victoria’s first pedi-cab service – Bike Cabs.
A cool start-up pedi-cab service for Melbourne’s inner city suburbs, Bike Cabs plans to reduce CBD congestion while providing a fun, clean, green and potentially quicker alternative to catching a cab, public transport or walking.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there’s a problem: money.
“We’re seeking crowd funding to build the business so there are more Bike Cabs to reduce congestion in the CBD and to transport Melburnians in a fun, environmentally friendly way,” said Melbourne artist and co-founder of Bike Cabs, Stephen Mushin.
“Being the world’s most liveable city almost necessitates this service. We’ve ponied up the funds to get our first two Bike Cabs, the permits and the uniforms but we now need to get the next two to get the business on a sustainable footing.
“If two Bike Cabs can save 1.25 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, four will set aside 2.5 tonnes of CO2 – that’s about the same as planting 2000 trees per year.”
Bike Cabs will operate within the City of Melbourne limit, operating under the same road rules as cyclists.
The cost of a journey with Bike Cabs is relative to a short trip on public transport and on-par with a regular taxi, with a flag fall of $5 and a distance rate of $2.50 per km.
Bike Cabs are equipped with small electric motors to help riders climb steep hills and for long hauls with multiple passengers. The lithium batteries required to power these motors are recharged using green energy sources.
