Australian startup, HERO Condoms, is today rolling out in stores across the country.
HERO Condoms aims to help end the AIDS epidemic by donating one condom to an AIDS organisation in a developing country, for each HERO Condom sold in Australia.
HIV/AIDS is a global epidemic affecting 34 million people worldwide. 23.5 million of those affected live in sub-Saharan Africa alone —including 91% of the world’s HIV-positive children.
26 year-old Dustin Leonard is the entrepreneur behind HERO Condoms who has turned his university assignment into a viable business with a humanitarian cause.
“Turning this idea into a business with a real product over the past nine months has been an incredibly journey. I’m thrilled that today HERO Condoms are available in stores around the country. We’re taking on some huge brands in the industry, but we’re confident Australian consumers will appreciate having the choice to do good while buying condoms.”
“While in Botswana, we found the existing condoms being donated through NGOs have product quality issues, which is making them unpopular and results in unprotected sex. The people there told us if they were presented with a better option, they would certainly be using condoms,” Dustin Leonard said.
HERO Condoms now has partners in Africa donating condoms and providing antiretroviral treatment (ART) to expectant mothers to minimise the chance HIV/AIDS being passed on to their newborns.
Big on sustainability, HERO Condoms is also helping the environment by reducing its carbon footprint. Methods such as rubber tapping from rubber trees in close proximity to the manufacturing plant are used to source the natural latex.
With an RRP $7.99 and sold in boxes of 12 made from 100% recycled cardboard, HERO Condoms are now available from major pharmacies around Australia including Amcal, Amcal Max, Guardian Pharmacies, and National Pharmacies, as well as University Co-Ops and adult stores.
