Big Dog Pet Foods is an Australian family-owned business that has been creating and manufacturing raw pet foods for our furry friends for over 15 years.
They have grown over that time to now manufacture more than 30 tonnes each week, and generated a turnover of over $6m this financial year.
Big Dog sold over 155 tonnes to overseas markets such as Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong this year, and they are also a contract manufacturer for a US brand of raw food which is supplied into Japan.
While other well-known pet food suppliers manufacture offshore (or have been sold to foreign investors), Big Dog Pet Foods is 100% Australian-owned and manufactured in Brisbane.
Owner (along with his wife Kirsten) and food scientist, Chris Essex says a raw diet is one that cats and dogs would dine on in the wild and is the kind nature intended.
A 15% yearly growth has prompted the company to expand and take on new employees, bringing the Big Dog team to 22.
Devoted to the health and happiness of our four-legged friends, Big Dog donates a generous $150,000 worth of raw pet food to Queensland Guide Dogs Australia annually. Chris is also a consultant to Smart Pups and Dogs for Kids with Disabilities, providing nutritional information and support for their “working” dogs.
Big Dog recipes contain natural forms of essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and oils and contain the finest Australian grown raw ingredients. Where possible, Big Dog source from organic resources or local farmers, and their meat products are from Human Consumption (export) accredited facilities.
Whilst the business started off manufacturing raw diets for our canine companions, Big Dog has expanded to also include raw diets and supplements for our equine and feline friends.
Looking to the future, Big Dog have an exciting new app on the way, targeting Australian pet owners and it’s the first of its kind.
