The pandemic has changed the narrative of fashion for men and women. The pandemic not only caused a shift in our lifestyle but also made us rethink our priorities. Most of us attained a significant psychological change. Even the financial situations perplexed us to reconsider our lifestyle choices. Didn’t most of us realize the importance of tailoring garments?
When it comes to fashion, men are a bit different from women. Women are more trend-savvy and incorporate a lot more creativity and newness in the trend cycles. On the other hand, men do not cycle the trends as fast. Therefore, the pace at which men interact with trends is much slower than women.
While in women trends appear in seasons, in men, they may take years. And prominently are more driven by seasonal trends than the men who are more for a bit of casual approach. Men gravitate towards what they are comfortable with. No wonder the classic Gucci staple loafers and the premium and versatile men’s leather jackets are trendy.
Men do not want to hop on from one trend to another, leaving most of their clothes lying dormant in their closets. They prefer a lean and more versatile wardrobe that they can use at any time without restrictions. Men will like to invest in a few lasting and versatile pieces. Style-conscious men will not hesitate to buy pricier timeless apparel that will stay with them for long.
Men’s fashion experts like Peskowitz point out that the last decade saw menswear undergoing Italian tailoring. There was more men’s apparel that was distinguished into being:
- Workwear-oriented.
- Preppy.
- Streetwear-stylish.
- Athletic gear.
- Technical and outdoor.
Men have extensively relied on suiting throughout the men’s fashion era, which always fostered their relationship with their tailor. Yes, men like tailoring more than women. They want clothes made to suit them, be it tailored plus-size leather jackets or a tuxedo.
On the other hand, women may not bother much about tailoring. They are more focused on clothing that suits the season. In the next one, they will focus on something better. Even Punk Rave lolita collection is gaining traction.
But in this flow of time, things are changing…
How?
Women have also reassessed their relationship with clothing, and the general narrative of “buy less, buy better” is echoing more than ever. So, it’s boiling down to a point where you have to take care of what looks good on you in place of going for trend-driven, one-moment cyclical behaviors.
Men are more focused on style than fashion. It’s more about fitting in with the other guys in their circle at one point. On the other hand, women want to look unique and different every time they dress; it should be different.
For men, it is their comfort zone that matters the most and how they want to be portrayed as individuals; for women, the aesthetic portrayal of their being counts more. Moreover, women are more particular about the deeper aesthetic aspects. So, they will always accessorize well, even with their most versatile apparel.
Women look forward to finding an expression of their being with their dress, while men just want to look good overall.
The Point of Merging Post Pandemic
That said, in pandemic times, however, men and women are interweaving into each other’s zones more and more than ever in the past.
Comfort has taken the front seat in the pandemic as most of us have been working from homes. Before we ever heard of COVID, the guys had their range of dresses like sportswear, corporate wear, and streetwear. But now, the work-from-home lifestyle left us focused on comfortable home wear like hoodies, sneakers, jackets, and sweatpants. Ditto with the ladies! Men and women are seen wearing similar clothes, soft and textural, breathable. Even the colors are overlapping. But, this is the case in comfort wear.
But, things are returning pretty back to the standard earlier version, which will surely return in part as much as we need it.
So, women will continue with their love for their skirts, minis, high waist jeans, cropped shirts, florals, and all their ear and hair accessories when they dress out, always! And men will love their genuine leather jackets and dark-colored chinos, and white T-shirts for a long time.
