It’s been a long time coming, but I’m excited to finally share some of my favourite ways to give your bedroom a fresh new look, without breaking the bank and without having to call in the decorators. As an interior designers I firmly believe that our bedrooms should be our personal little sanctuary, a space where we can truly relax, recharge and of course, sleep. So, let’s get to it, here are my practical tips to refresh your bedroom that I’ve found most effective.
Colour
Personally, I love how a splash of colour can transform a room and give it a freshen up. If I’m in the mood for a big change, I’ll grab a paintbrush start on an accent wall. It’s a simple way to add some boldness without having to commit to a full room makeover. If I’m not quite up for some painting, I’ll just opt for some colourful accessories like pillows, rugs, or even a cool piece of wall art. These little pops of colour can change the vibe of a room with minimal work.
Lighting
Lighting is usually overlooked but I can’t stress enough how important it is, as it’s a cheap way to add mood to your bedroom. One of my favourite tricks is layering different types of light. I start with overhead lighting for general use, and then add bedside lamps for reading and making a cosier feel using warm light bulbs. Sometimes, I’ll add some string lights for a bit of magic in teenagers’ bedrooms too. Installing dimmers is another game-changer I love, they give me the flexibility to adjust the mood lighting at any time.
Furniture
Rearranging furniture is often my first go-to move when I want a fresh look in a bedroom. I like to visualise first and then play around with layouts until I find a setup that I prefer. Moving things around is free and it can completely change a room’s energy.
When I’m in the market for new furniture, I always consider functionality. I might add a bedside table next to the bed or a storage box at the end of the bed to stop clutter. Furniture like bedside tables and storage boxes are well priced and come in a variety of colours and style to suit any type of bedroom.
Textiles
Updating the various fabric in the bedroom is another of my go-tos for a quick refresh. I’ll often swap out bedding to introduce new textures like a cosy knit throw paired with smooth cotton sheets which can bring in some depth. When it comes to curtains, I choose sheer drapes for a light, airy feel or blackout curtains if I want to create a cocoon-like space (or if someone in the household works night shift and needs to sleep during the day).
Personal Touches
Artwork and personal items can really make a bedroom feel like home. Put up some pieces that you get joy from looking at, if it’s a teenagers room that can include things like posters that resonate with me or putting up a gallery wall with my favourite photos. These personal touches make the room feel unique.
And if you’re a big of a nature lover, let’s talk plants. I adore adding greenery! Even if you’re like me and don’t have the greenest thumb, cactus’s or peace lilies are easy to care for and breathe life into the room.
Small Changes with Big Effects
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference like upcycling furniture. You can change knobs on furniture, sand it down if it’s made from real wood and give it a lick of paint. This can change an older dated but of furniture to a refreshed stand out bit of furniture in the room.
Adding a few luxurious touches, such as soft towels or a plush robe, can also improve your everyday experience. These small changes make the space feel more indulgent and comfortable which should give you a little smile every time you enter.
Redesigning a bedroom doesn’t have to be expensive or hard work. With a few thoughtful tweaks, you can create a fantastic space that you genuinely enjoy spending time in.
